@BenBajarin ... More interested in the tech side. Is ARM ever going to tell us what's going on w/ SVE? If Apple (and apparently QC) are both uninterested, isn't that a message? And how will ARM respond?

Qualcomm's Q4 and Arm's Q2 earnings show the smartphone industry making an uneven comeback, with both companies reporting a stronger demand for high-end models

- Both companies are seeing stronger demand for high-end models  — Shares of chip companies climbed on Thursday after earnings

@dylan522p There are multiple interesting workloads that are not captured by the usual 1st day low-tech non-engineer benchmarks, and which could have been improved substantially... These include anything VM related (esp TLB issues) and anything AMX related.

Apple updates its Mac mini with M2 and M2 Pro options, improved graphics performance, up to 32GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and more, starting at $599

Apple today launched the new Mac mini lineup, available with M2 and M2 Pro chips inside.  The M2 Mac mini starts at a new lower price of $599.

@WrenIndian @witeken Oh FFS. This is because ASML can't deliver high NA EUV machines fast enough to roll in better lithography immediately. Intel will face exactly the same constraint! https://www.anandtech.com/...

@dylan522p ... What's clear is that there is a CHANGE. (1) Calling it a stumble (as opposed to, eg, my hypothesis of a pivot to - 2yr CPU cycle - new cores *debuting* on the Mac side) and (2) then proffering an explanation (engineers leaving) is where you are receiving pushback...

@reneritchie ... That's not correct Renee. Even without process improvement, there is a constant stream of µArch improvements resulting in higher IPC and/or lower energy, and there is no reason to believe those have hit a wall. (Hell I can list 10 things they could be doing in new designs.)

@reneritchie ... I do agree with the point that, *for iPhone*, transistors spent elsewhere on the SoC than the big cores are probably a better fit to the product. Which is why I hypothesize that what has REALLY changed is: new cores debuting in the iPhone.

@jonmasters Oh it will, just in different form factors. We see it in smart watches right now. Will probably see it again in smart glasses once Apple launches and everyone knows what to (try to) copy.

@IanCutress BUT Apple and Huawei chips up to 7nm were > 90% of TSMC max. Intel (even Atom) were1/3 to 1/2. TSMC is meaningful in products, INTC number is not. 5nm looks weird but we only have one data (Apple) and Apple was in a rush with M1/A14 1/

Intel Foundry Services could succeed if Intel can sort out its manufacturing process, find needed funds, and build up a true customer service capability

Digits to Dollars :

@IanCutress Everything about M1/A14 looks like the priority (of course!) was getting x86/mac aspects working. Core and GPU look VERY similar. Probably no effort made to optimize for the new process. 2/

No-one else has pointed out what seems to me the most interesting point of the new 🍎Security PDF: did Apple make design (not just bug) changes, and respin the A13 and S5, to add the secure storage gen 2? Have they ever before done such an update? https://support.apple.com/...
