Google rolls out Gemini 4 Argon globally via the Gemini API and to Google AI Pro subscribers in the Gemini app and AI Mode, and in Antigravity for Ultra users

After months of trailing its rivals, Google says Argon competes with the industry's best.

The Verge Robert Hart

Context & Ripple Effects

Google had first confined Argon to a small cybersecurity-partner cohort and then trusted cyber defenders through Fairwind, alongside participation in the US voluntary prerelease process. The broader launch extends a staged deployment path rather than introducing the model first through a single channel.

The move follows Gemini 3.1 Pro's app-wide availability in February. Reports from some Google employees had questioned Argon's real-world coding consistency despite benchmark results; Google disputed that characterization, making wider developer and user access an important test of its performance claims.

First-order effects

  • API developers, Gemini AI Pro subscribers, AI Mode users, and Ultra-tier Antigravity users gain access to Argon through the Google products they already use.
  • Google moves Argon beyond its restricted cyber-defense audience, broadening the pool able to evaluate its coding, knowledge-work, and enterprise-workflow capabilities.

Second-order effects

  • Putting one flagship model across the API, Gemini app, Search's AI Mode, and Antigravity lets Google turn model performance into differentiated experiences across its owned distribution surfaces.
  • The split between broad availability and earlier restricted cyber access establishes a deployment pattern in which Google can expose general capabilities widely while staging sensitive use cases through selected partners and government processes.

Third-order effects

  • If Google repeats this release model, frontier-model competition will increasingly hinge on integrated distribution—developer APIs, consumer assistants, search interfaces, and specialized tools—not benchmark claims alone.
  • Staged access for cyber capabilities points toward a more governed model-release process, where sensitive deployments are tested with designated users before broad product integration.

The trend: Frontier AI vendors are converging on integrated stacks that distribute the same model through developer, consumer, search, and specialized-workflow channels while gating higher-risk uses.

I spent a decent amount of time with Gemini 4 before launch. Overall, Gemini 4 is a big jump over previous Gemini models and it is the first non-OpenAI/Anthropic model to pass the Fable/Mythos/Astra bar. It is also much more pleasant and more agentic then previous Gemini models, …

I dropped $5 to test Argon on my niche US politics knowledge question that has eluded every model except the Fable currently being stealth tested. If there's one thing Argon should be getting right it's this! But it got it wrong and hallucinated 🥀

Been using Argon for a bit, and it's actually a really good model! Not quite frontier in coding but very very competent, does not have the old Gemini flaws of self-flagellation, it's quite good in design, and a bit autistic to talk to (creates long lists) but still good. I don't …

1/ We had early access to Gemini 4 Argon. Its multimodal reasoning is a big step up: it reads dense screens, documents and spreadsheets the way a person does. With Cua Driver it works in your apps like a coworker next to you, without taking over your screen.
