OpenAI debuts an Apple Messages plugin for ChatGPT on macOS, letting ChatGPT Work and Codex read, search, and analyze chats, draft and send messages, and more

9to5Mac Zac Hall

Context & Ripple Effects

OpenAI has been building the ChatGPT desktop app into a cross-application surface for two years: the macOS app opened to all users in 2024, then gained the ability to read code from developer tools like VS Code and Xcode via screen-reading integrations. In July it merged Codex and ChatGPT into a single desktop app with ChatGPT Work, an agent designed to gather context across apps and files.

The Apple Messages plugin is the next step in that arc: instead of only reading what is on screen, ChatGPT Work and Codex can now read, search, and analyze message history and draft and send messages directly. Messaging is a more sensitive surface than code editors, so this tests how far users will grant an agent write access to personal communication.

First-order effects

  • Mac users running the upgraded ChatGPT desktop app can delegate messaging to ChatGPT Work and Codex — searching past chats, analyzing threads, and sending drafted messages from inside iMessage.

Second-order effects

  • OpenAI's app-read footprint expands from developer tools to personal communication, pressuring rival assistant makers to match messaging-level access or cede the default-agent position on macOS.

Third-order effects

  • If messaging joins code editors and files as agent-readable context, assistants consolidate toward an operating-layer role where one agent holds cross-app context — raising privacy and permission-scope questions Apple and regulators will eventually have to arbitrate.

The trend: Desktop AI assistants are evolving from chat windows into operating layers that read and act across native apps, with messaging as the newest and most sensitive frontier.

You can just read your iMessage database on your own machine, it's not encrypted. There's a popular tool called imsg you can install to make it easy and it also builds a database for fast searches. Back in iTunes days there were a bunch of third party tools that could read your

I'd love to see Apple allow this. Previous attempts by companies to intersect iMessage ended in failure either by getting cut off or after.... errrr.... suggestions by Apple's legal teams to stop. I'd like to see OpenAI go the distance on this one to open up pathways to get Windo…

anyone excited about this? i love how apple tries to make imessage private with ete encryption and codex can just crawl through your entire all time message history in 3 min and then it stays on their servers for who knows how long dope

I do remember years back asking the CEO and CMO of an integrator-chat-assistant company, “so what happens when OpenAI just builds the integrations?” and they both just kind of looked at me like they'd never thought of it before.

We've added native integration with iMessage, so ChatGPT can now send & read messages for you! It can also analyze your messages! It's really fun to get insights about who you talk to, and what you talk to people about.
