Google unveils the $899+ Pixel 11, $1,099+ 11 Pro, and $1,299+ 11 Pro XL, with a Tensor G6, new Gemini features, Magic Capture to pick the best frames, and more

For the last few years, Google's Pixel has been a showcase of new AI features, with few hardware changes from the previous year's devices.

TechCrunch Ivan Mehta

Context & Ripple Effects

Google’s prior premium Pixel generation used Tensor G5, while the new flagship line advances to G6 and again centers software-led differentiation. The simultaneous Pixel 11 Pro Fold launch extends that processor and camera-generation story into Google’s foldable tier.

The timing also matters because Google has pushed its broader Assistant-to-Gemini transition on most Android devices into 2026. Pixel therefore remains Google’s immediate hardware showcase for Gemini while the wider Android migration is unfinished.

First-order effects

  • Pixel 11 buyers get Google’s latest Gemini features and Magic Capture at launch, making AI-assisted photography and interaction the principal new reasons to upgrade in a lineup described as having limited hardware change.
  • Google now has a G6-based flagship family spanning conventional phones and the foldable Pixel 11 Pro Fold, giving its premium devices a more unified AI-compute message.

Second-order effects

  • Google’s delayed Assistant-to-Gemini migration makes the Pixel line a nearer-term distribution channel for Gemini than most Android devices, increasing the value of exclusive or early device experiences.
  • The move from the Tensor G5 Pixel 10 Pro generation to G6 keeps Google’s annual chip refresh tied to feature differentiation, raising the pressure on competing premium handsets to articulate similarly visible AI benefits.

Third-order effects

  • If Google sustains this cadence, Tensor revisions and Gemini feature releases will increasingly define Pixel upgrade cycles more than industrial-design changes, tightening the link between Google’s hardware and AI distribution strategies.
  • A slower Gemini transition across Android would preserve Pixel’s role as Google’s controlled proving ground, potentially widening the gap between first-party devices and the broader Android ecosystem.

The trend: Premium smartphones are becoming distribution vehicles for proprietary AI experiences, with custom silicon refreshes serving as the release cadence for those features.

The best of Gemini is right at the heart of the new Pixel 11 phones and the new Pixel Watch 5. We call it Gemini Intelligence. It's no longer just an operating system that helps you use your phone, it's an intelligence system that gets things done for you.

Once again the Pixel phones I can recommend are the 11 Pro & Pro XL 11 and 11 Pro Fold are not worth it, with many better options available Pro and Pro XL bring nice upgrades, with the 1/1.95" 5x Telephoto and brighter displays being stand out features vs S26 Ultra & 17 Pro Max […

Pixel exists so Google can demonstrate its own services under conditions it controls, and in 2026 that service is Gemini. Anyone can run Gemini on a Galaxy or an iPhone. Only on Pixel does Google set the silicon, the integration, and the ship date together. The foldable [video]

I went to NYC this week to check out the new Pixel 11 series ahead of today's announcement. And I have some thoughts. Let's start with the base Pixel 11. So the Pixel 11 is not a huge upgrade over the Pixel 10, but it does have a much thinner camera bar. At first, I didn't [image…

This is a similar coating to what Apple added to iPhone 17 and iPhone Air My Pixel 10 Pro XL has been used for less time than my iPhone Air, but is ~1 month older than it. Air display is perfect, and the Pixel is uh... not. This coating is a must. [image]

Funny to see @Google take a little jab about its camera bar: “It's so iconic that people are starting to copy us a little bit there.” Of course it's talking about @Apple's iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. #MadebyGoogle

$GOOGL raises Pixel 11 prices by $100 citing a “severe” memory crunch as higher component costs start reaching consumer devices. That is another strong read-through for $MU, $SKHY and Samsung as tight memory supply continues supporting higher pricing. [image]

@mweinbach I feel every gen of Pixel is “this is almost THE device to have,” and then they flub a few things. And hey, I get it for your main line. But why not have one “Pro” model that actually feels pro instead of being just one more camera and “it's bigger.” After 10 years of …

Google is out here crushing it with its new Pixels. I'm like @MKBHD: Keep hoping each will be “the year,” but come away disappointed. His title was perfect. Don't get me wrong, I love that new olive/gold colorway, but as usual, these are underwhelming. [image]

Also went hands-on with the new Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL. These colors also look amazing, I think Google is the second-best when it comes to colors, behind Motorola. That Pixel Glow leak? Yeah it's called HiLight and it's kind of underwhelming. It essentially only works when [imag…
