Sources: Apple is already taping out M7 with major NPU upgrades, and plans M7 Ultra with 1.5TB RAM, and M8, for 2028; new Pencils are coming with a new iPad Pro

Also: New Apple Pencils are coming.  —  Apple's new Mac chip road map represents the company's latest move to rebuild …

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple’s reported chip plans build on earlier coverage that it would bypass higher-end M6 variants and move Pro and Max models into the M7 generation to strengthen on-device AI capabilities. The M7 tape-out report makes that roadmap more concrete, while extending it to an Ultra configuration and a subsequent M8 generation.

The iPad side follows a longer sequence of Pro-focused upgrades: prior coverage tied an M4-equipped iPad Pro and a haptic Pencil to Apple’s AI push, after reports of a broader iPad Pro redesign. New Pencils alongside another iPad Pro suggest the accessory remains part of the premium-tablet refresh cycle.

First-order effects

  • Apple’s Mac roadmap is being oriented around substantially stronger neural-processing capability in M7, with an Ultra option aimed at workloads that also benefit from exceptionally large memory capacity.
  • A new iPad Pro and new Apple Pencils would refresh both the flagship tablet and its core input accessory together, reinforcing Apple’s premium iPad configuration.

Second-order effects

  • Mac software developers and professional buyers gain a clearer incentive to prioritize local AI features and memory-intensive workflows on higher-end Apple silicon, rather than treating AI acceleration as confined to a single product tier.
  • The decision to fold high-end Pro and Max chips into M7 concentrates Apple’s next premium-Mac transition around one generation, raising the importance of its launch cadence and product segmentation for Mac buyers.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple sustains this roadmap, NPU capability and unified-memory scale will become more central differentiators across its computing lineup, not merely incremental CPU and graphics upgrades.
  • The pattern points to a tighter hardware-and-accessory strategy in which premium Macs address increasingly demanding local workloads while iPad Pro refreshes preserve the tablet’s role as a higher-end creative and productivity platform.

The trend: Apple is increasingly organizing its silicon and premium-device roadmap around on-device AI performance, memory headroom, and coordinated hardware ecosystems.

Apple will begin rolling out iPhone 16s to retail store employees, which better support tap-to-pay on heavier credit cards, allowing them to begin to drop the current payment terminal attachments. More in Power On: https://www.bloomberg.com/...

This would match the 2019 Mac Pro, of course, if it's able to actually happen in the current memory environment.

Apple will launch new Apple Pencils next spring, including a new version of the Apple Pencil Pro and low-end USB-C Apple Pencil. These will debut alongside the next iPad Pros. More in Power On: https://www.bloomberg.com/...

The M7 Ultra is designed to support as much as 1.5 terabytes of memory — double the capacity planned for the M5 Ultra — though whether Apple ultimately offers that configuration will depend on the state of the industry.

Also in Power On: I've run all three beta versions of the 27 operating system series on Apple's various platforms, and we're at the point where you can safely install them. (In fact, the first public betas are coming this week, I'm told.)

The Apple Car wasn't entirely a failure: It was the beginning of Apple's AI hardware strategy and the Neural Engine. If not for the car, Apple would be even further behind in AI. So it wasn't all for nothing.
