Anthropic says the US Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5

We've received notice that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. We'll begin restoring access tomorrow, and will share an update soon. We're grateful to our users for their patience, and to everyone who worked with us on

@anthropicai

    Over the past two weeks, we have worked closely with Anthropic to analyze and approve Fable 5 to ensure alignment across the US Government and strengthen America's leadership in AI.

    Under President Trump's leadership the United States is the undisputed winner in the AI race.  My gratitude to companies across industries who continue to work closely with the White House to implement the President's EO: Promoting Advanced AI Innovation and Security...

    The Fable 5 relaunch is kind of fake: “some routine tasks like coding and debugging will fall back to Opus 4.8” You can use that even more restricted Fable 5 version in your Anthropic subscriptions until July 7th

    For the record, folks, when @SusieWiles47 gets involved, things generally go very well. Many of the things that go wrong in this administration happen in her absence and are fixed when she takes control. Many such instances. Thank you, Susie! GPT-5.6 next!

    Still no indication there is a standard process here. Anthropic technical staff were hammering this out with the government over two weeks. Is that the process for each new model release?

    This is great news. Hopefully going forward the US government and major labs can agree on a framework to be used for releasing new frontier models safely and efficiently. It's critical that the US stays at the forefront of AI both domestically and internationally.

    We all knew this was going to happen. We're currently in a slight down beat for events so people are hyping this up like its exciting but this was priced in the minute they restricted it. On a meta level, still nothing ever happens.

    My contrarian take on AI is that there's a second-mover advantage in the AI race, where America's wins are transient because China can “distill” and copy America's innovation to catch up. If America falls behind, this works in reverse: America could piggyback on China's lead.

    2) Anthropic makes the cost of this White House freakout clear. US labs now have to make a much more conservative precision-recall tradeoff on cyber refusals. US models will become much less useful for defensive cybersecurity work unless you are in the trusted group. [image]
  • @alexstamos Alex Stamos on x
    “No big deal, just join the trusted group!” the apologists will say, but the restrictions mean you can't build a product on those models. Security companies and startups that provide services to others will now be driven to use Chinese models. Big win for PRC labs this month.
  • @alexstamos Alex Stamos on x
    4) There is no good scoring framework for jailbreaks; this would be an improvement. The inclusion of Amazon as the first name in the coalition is not an accident. Anthropic is saying “Amazon's inability to appropriately communicate severity threw our industry into chaos”. [image]
