Sam Altman reflects on the attack on his house, OpenAI's success, personal regrets, and advocates for de-escalating rhetoric and tactics in the AI industry

Here is a photo of my family.  I love them more than anything.  —  Images have power, I hope.  Normally we try to be pretty private …

Sam Altman

Discussion

the newyorker's worst crime, aside from heightening suspicion of technologists in dangerous ways, was making us read all that. if i understood the article correctly farrow pored through through hundred page dossiers people constructed against sam and found nothing of note
  • @shakeelhashim Shakeel on x
What happened to Sam Altman and his family is really awful. It is hard to reconcile his call to “de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics” with his implication that a piece of critical journalism (Ronan Farrow and Andrew Marantz's New Yorker article, presumably) was responsible for […

@ShakeelHashim That was a bad word choice and i wish i hadn't used it. It has been a tough day and I am not thinking the most clearly that I ever have.
  • @lulumeservey Lulu Cheng Meservey on x
He's right; words and narratives have immense power This time the target was Sam; next time it may be another person or lab The people building AI are working hard to make something great for the world, even if imperfect The apocalyptic narratives about them have real [image]
  • @angaisb_ Angel on x
It's really sad that Sam has to go through this Unfortunately, I think it's going to get worse. All CEOs of the big AI labs should hire a lot more security [image]
  • @joshuakushner Joshua Kushner on x
sam is a wonderful human. many have worked very hard to make you think otherwise
  • @garrisonlovely Garrison Lovely on x
What happened today is terrible, but insinuating that journalism was responsible for it is... kinda a perfect encapsulation of the pattern of behavior outlined in that article. [image]
  • @kellylsims Kelly Sims on x
It turns out when you string a bunch of quarter-truths together exclusively from someone's bitter competitors it has consequences.
  • @nbaschez Nathan Baschez on x
Sam is right that AI is far too important for one company to control The app layer and the model layer ideally should be modularly connected to diffuse this power, but the massive subsidies that Anthropic and OpenAI offer are threatening this Idk what the solution is
  • @tenobrus @tenobrus on x
for all that i don't feel i can trust him, i can't fucking imagine being in sam's position, and there are many many many people who would have done a far worse job [image]

I don't care what the fuck you think about Altman, we don't firebomb people's houses as a form of expressing disagreement.

please don't hurt people under the guise of saving people. it doesn't make you a martyr, just a gullible and cruel fool. sam is a great man, i wish him and his family and friends well. there's enough going on and perhaps we can pull together under our shared values of non

Look guys, whatever you think of @sama, I think everyone at Ant including and especially @DarioAmodei believes that no one should be throwing molotovs at his house.
  • @bigblackjacobin Edward Ongweso Jr on x
One of the most dishonest things Sam Altman could've implied is that a critical piece of journalism by Ronan Farrow (which made clear he is a dishonest actor) caused the attack on him. Ironically enough, that's exactly what he did!
  • @theo @theo on x
I hope we can take this moment to tone down the hostility as an industry. It's okay to disagree, but the level of “evil” we have assigned people will lead to more violence.
  • @traestephens Trae Stephens on x
Well said, @sama. Threats to people's physical safety and the safety of their families is completely out of bounds. “It is important that the democratic process remains more powerful than companies” No single person or company is responsible for the entire weight of this
  • @jenniferhli Jennifer Li on x
First, no one should be personally targeted for the work they do. Disagree all you want, but threats to personal safety cross a hard line. We all have families. Second, this analogy maps uncomfortably well to AI right now. The question who's Frodo & his friends, and who becomes […

There is never any justification for throwing a Molotov cocktail at a family's house. The fact that, after such an event, @sama can write a gracious and reflective post is a testament to his ability to see the bigger picture. Such ability will be sorely needed in the times ahead.
