I think there are serious and sober critiques of Anthropic that can be made based on their choices in this episode; but as many have observed, the government has the freedom to not contract with them. A supply chain risk designation doesn't make much sense.

Anthropic says it'll challenge “any supply chain risk designation in court” and that the designation would only affect contractors' use of Claude on DOD work

Earlier today, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth shared on X that he is directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply chain risk.

Until a full account of the Anthropic-DoW negotiations eventually comes out in testimony under oath, it's hard to know for sure how to interpret it. But the supply chain risk decision will be pretty consequential for the AI industry and likely not in a productive way.

I suspect this will later turn into an IBM win; who is going to entrust vibecoder weekend hackers with using AI to rewrite COBOL transaction systems? No, it will be IBM who gets trusted to do it, and it will be cheaper so they'll be able to do more of it in less time.

Sam's clarification is good and important.  Furthermore - I don't think it can be overstated how critical compute will become as a national strategic asset.  It is so important to build.  It is vitally important to the interests of the US and democracy broadly to build tons of it here.

6/ But the disclosure of confidential information from frontier labs, however well-intentioned, can be outright dangerous. This letter asks for a policy that would in effect give safety staff carte blanche to make disclosures at will, based on their own judgement.
