Apple unveils $999+ 11" and $1,299+ 13" iPad Pros, with M4, an OLED Ultra Retina XDR screen, up to 1,600 nits; the 13" is Apple's thinnest product yet, at 5.1mm

At its “Let Loose” virtual event this morning, Apple introduced its long-awaited iPad Pro updates.

Apple's Thunderbolt connector is thicker than these new iPad Pros.  They're impossibly thin.
  • @technicallymims Christopher Mims on threads
I still can't decide if the proliferation of Apple device types is a good or bad thing.  Pro: More options are good for power users who are deeply invested in optimizing their spend to get exactly what they want Con: Distracting for the hardware teams, more overhead in terms of p…

I don't like beating this drum, but once you get past the thinner design/better screen, you once again realize that the iPad Pro hardware isn't the problem.  And that this refresh, while impressive in some ways, doesn't do much to change the story or trajectory of the iPad lineup…
  • @felixsalmon Felix Salmon on threads
Kinda wild how the entry-level iPad Mini is now 43% more expensive than the entry-level iPad, which basically does exactly the same thing except it's much bigger.
  • @tookthescenicroute Jon Gales on threads
I'd love to aee my photography on the new iPad Pro OLED display, but with the keyboard it's essentially a janky laptop.  It's a bummer I can't get this same display on a MacBook Pro.
  • @mgsiegler M.G. Siegler on threads
The 11-inch M4 iPad Pro is under 1 pound (0.98 pounds) which is not only lighter than the last generation (1.03 pounds), it's lighter than the new iPad um, Air (1.02 pounds). iPad Pro Air?
  • @chriswelch Chris Welch on threads
Annnnnnd sure enough, there's no sign of a smart keyboard folio for the new OLED iPad Pros. https://www.apple.com/... RIP.  That sucks.
  • @davidimel David Imel on threads
New iPads always interest me until I remember I have the artistic chops of a hibernating tortoise
  • @benedictevans Benedict Evans on threads
There's really not much new you can say about the iPad.  It's roughly the same sized business as the Mac.  But it didn't take over the world, not because it's ‘not as good as a Mac’ but because for most people, the iPhone is already all the computer than you need. …
  • @chancehmiller Chance Miller on threads
Give me an iPad mini with the Ultra Retina XDR screen and I will pay you $1 million.
  • @benedictevans Benedict Evans on threads
Apple never disclosed a weight for the old iPad keyboard ('heavy'), and doesn't seem to want to give one for the new model either.

If you have a drink every time Apple talks about AI performance, you will die.

“The thinnest Apple product ever.”  Did they hire Jony Ive again?
  • @jjackyliang Jacky Liang on threads
The iPad (Pro or not) has never been limited by its hardware performance.  Never.. It's always been the software.  Hoping to see any points otherwise to improve the software experience, but I genuinely doubt it.
  • @wongmjane Jane Manchun Wong on threads
yup, OLED is in the both of the new iPad Pro models time to pull the trigger :)
  • @mgsiegler M.G. Siegler on threads
“Tandem OLED”.  “Ultra Retina XDR”.  We're stretching on these marketing names a bit... AppleEvent
  • @drbarnard David Barnard on x
Hah, this is pretty much exactly what my son said after watching the event. “M4 seems great and all, but what can you actually do on an iPad? And gaming?! You don't need ray tracing and all that power to play iPad games.” 👀 WWDC 🤞

What did you think of this video shown during #AppleEvent to introduce new #iPadPro ?  It may be cultural, but it appears to have fallen into disrepute among not a few Japanese who respect craftsmanship.  Some were seriously being offended and disgusted.  Apple could just introdu…

The iPad Pro is now more airy than the iPad Air. I it's time to clean up the iPad line. Drop the Air. It's time. Do it. iPad mini, iPad, iPad Pro [image]

iPad sales will get a nice boost in June and September. That tailwind will likely fade in 2025. Separately, $AAPL is moving faster to get new silicon in the market, a competitive advantage in AI. https://deepwatermgmt.com/...

@tim_cook I felt sad when I saw creative tools such as musical instruments and cameras being destroyed. I don't think the creators will like this video. Is it my Japanese sensibility that makes me feel this way?
  • @snazzylabs @snazzylabs on x
I'm getting so tired of people “dunking” on the iPad because it's not a Mac.  While the iPad may not be a desktop replacement/substitute for you—or me!—it is for many artists, musicians, students, 3D modelers and more.  Apple sells more iPads than Macs.  Just let people enjoy the…

New 13" iPad Pro has a 5% smaller battery than the previous 12.9" model, while the 11" iPad Pro has a 9% larger battery than previous model. Why the big difference? The 11" is going from 600 nit LCD to 1000-1600 nit Tandem OLED. This explains why it's thicker than the 13" Pro [im…

Sort of blown away that the new iPad Pro is $999 while also getting 256GB of SSD at the same time. Was expecting that price but with 128GB [image]

@DylanMcD8 iPad has a better form factor, touch screen, better display, pen input, etc. Wouldn't say it's a “worse value,” it's just a different product.

@tim_cook Crushing symbols of human creativity and cultural achievements to appeal to pro creators, nice. Maybe for the next Apple Watch Pro you should crush sports equipment, show a robot running faster than a man, then turn to the camera and say, “God is dead and we have killed…

I've never owned a MacBook and frankly I don't think I ever will. The new iPad Pro has M4 touchscreen, 5G, and probably the most advanced OLED display on earth. Where exactly is the MacBook better?
  • @akiroom Hiroki Akiyama on x
@tim_cook It is a heartbreaking, uncomfortable, and egotistic advertisement. When I see this result, I'm ashamed to buy Apple products since nineteen years.

Gross. This is the worst brand promotion I've ever seen. Perhaps the initial idea was to incorporate the value of analog items, but the creative direction was misguided - why did they destroy great products in such a terrible way? They even crushed their reputation.

The iPad is great for watching Netflix in bed. Anything else you want it to do beyond that is easier to do on a laptop.
  • @obrien Chris O'Brien on x
As a former Apple reporter, it's amazing to watch the reverence that still greets new hardware. Today, Apple is a credit card and TV show company. Everything else is stagnant. The hardware fetishization is increasingly out of proportion in terms of innovation and biz impact.

few odd things about the #AppleEvent 1. lower storage ipad pro models have a binned M4 chip (9 cores instead of 10) 2. new ipads announced today only support the USB-C pencil and the pencil pro. doesn't seem to support the 2nd gen pencil step backwards?
