Yelp’s $300 million Hatch acquisition marks a shift toward AI-powered business communications after years of coverage dominated by its fight with Google over local search.

Who they are

Yelp appears in this coverage as a local-business discovery and reviews platform whose maps, reviews, photos and other business information are valuable both to consumers and to emerging AI search products. Its stories also position it as an advocate and litigant focused on how dominant search platforms shape competition in local search and local-search advertising.

The recent arc

Recent coverage moved from distribution and search-market conflict into product and acquisition activity. In March 2024, Perplexity licensed Yelp data for restaurant-recommendation answers; in August, Yelp sued Google, alleging that Google leveraged general-search dominance in local-search services and advertising; and in November it agreed to acquire auto-repair estimates site RepairPal for $80 million. Yelp also challenged Google’s EU Digital Markets Act search-result changes, saying a tested variant reduced clicks away from Google.

The tension

The central tension is Yelp’s dependence on being discoverable in an internet increasingly mediated by Google and AI answer engines, while Google remains its most persistent competitive and regulatory antagonist. Yelp’s lawsuit and earlier criticism of Google’s search presentation contrast with its Perplexity partnership: Yelp is pressing for traffic and competitive access while also supplying the structured local information that AI interfaces need.

Why it matters

If the current trajectory holds, Yelp could become less defined solely by consumer reviews and more by the local-business infrastructure layered on top of that data: AI-generated business content, automated customer responses and appointment handling, plus vertical services such as repair estimates. Whether that broadens Yelp’s position will depend in part on whether AI partners create meaningful distribution and whether its challenge to Google changes the economics of local discovery.

Yelp has appeared in 74 articles since 2015-01. Coverage peaked in 2024Q3 with 3 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Google, Facebook, Jeremy Stoppelman, Grubhub.
