A 2023 ruling that exchange sales of XRP were not securities transactions drove U.S. relistings, while 2025 coverage shifted to reserve policy and ETFs.

Who they are

XRP is a cryptocurrency closely tied to Ripple and its long-running U.S. securities-law fight with the SEC. In coverage, it functions both as the asset at the center of rulings over Ripple’s sales practices and as a widely traded cryptoasset whose access, price and institutional treatment are shaped by exchanges, regulators and policy announcements.

The recent arc

The major recent inflection point was July 2023, when a U.S. judge found that Ripple’s sales to sophisticated investors violated securities law but sales on exchanges were not securities offers. That distinction prompted Coinbase, Kraken and Bitstamp to resume XRP trading, with Gemini exploring a listing; later rulings denied the SEC an interlocutory appeal and, in August 2024, imposed a $125 million Ripple penalty rather than the nearly $2 billion the agency had sought. The SEC’s October 2024 appeal kept the legal story active.

Coverage then moved beyond the Ripple case in 2025. President Trump’s inclusion of XRP alongside Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Cardano in a proposed U.S. crypto reserve drove sharp price gains, followed by losses amid volatility; the subsequent executive order centered a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and stockpile of forfeited assets. September brought the launch of spot Dogecoin and XRP ETFs by Rex-Osprey after SEC generic listing standards, while CoinShares later withdrew XRP ETF registrations as it prioritized higher-margin opportunities.

The tension

The core tension is between XRP’s exchange-market legitimacy and the regulatory treatment of Ripple’s institutional sales. The 2023 ruling enabled relistings by Coinbase and peers without ending the SEC conflict, and the agency’s later appeal underscored that distinction. More recently, XRP has also been pulled into a broader contest among Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Cardano for U.S. policy recognition and investable-product demand.

Why it matters

XRP’s coverage shows how a token’s market access can be reshaped by legal distinctions rather than a single all-or-nothing regulatory verdict. If exchange listings and ETF distribution continue to expand while the Ripple litigation reaches a clearer endpoint, XRP could become a significant test case for how U.S. markets separate token trading from issuer-led sales. That outcome remains uncertain given the SEC dispute and the uneven follow-through between reserve rhetoric, asset stockpiling and commercial product demand.

XRP has appeared in 61 articles since 2017-12. Coverage peaked in 2023Q3 with 6 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside SEC, Ripple, Coinbase, Bitcoin.
