The recent arc

Coverage reached its recent high in 2025Q4 after building through 2025 around active Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act enforcement. The defining spring actions were the Commission’s €500M DMA fine for Apple and €200M fine for Meta, both accompanied by cease-and-desist orders and appeals, alongside its decision that Meta’s Facebook Marketplace no longer met the DMA designation threshold. Those moves extended a longer record of high-stakes platform intervention, including investigations involving TikTok and X and an earlier preliminary view that Google might need to divest its ad business.

In 2026, the story broadened from platform compliance to economic security and technology sovereignty. The Commission unveiled a tech-sovereignty package including a Cloud and AI Development Act, approved €659M of German aid for four chip facilities, and sought access to frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic. It continued enforcement as well, with preliminary DSA findings on Meta’s child-access controls and a €200M DSA fine for Temu, while reviewing JD.com’s Ceconomy acquisition under foreign-subsidies rules.

The tension

The coverage centers on the Commission’s attempt to impose EU market, safety and competition rules on predominantly US technology companies while reducing Europe’s dependence on them. Meta, Apple and Google are recurring targets under the DMA or antitrust framework; DSA cases bring platform-risk issues to Meta, TikTok, X and Temu. The July proposal to exempt wearable technology from removable-battery requirements, reportedly after US pressure and to clear a hurdle for Meta’s smart glasses, shows that enforcement and industrial regulation can also collide with diplomatic and commercial pressure.

Why it matters

If this trajectory holds, the Commission’s role will increasingly connect platform regulation with Europe’s ability to build and control critical cloud, AI and semiconductor infrastructure. That could make EU access, product design, acquisitions and public support more consequential for global tech companies, but the record also suggests the outcome will depend on how consistently Brussels balances strict enforcement with competitiveness, foreign-policy pressure and the practical need to work with US AI providers.
