Apple and Meta got the first EU Digital Markets Act fines.  Apple got a €500 million penalty for App Store.  Meta has been fined €200 million for ‘Consent or Pay’, since some services should be provided for free and without processing user data. https://ec.europa.eu/...

Also, the Commission decided today that Facebook Marketplace should no longer be designated under the DMA. As of 2024, Facebook Marketplace was no longer an important gateway for business users to reach customers, due to stricter conditions enforced by Meta for business usage.

Interesting choice of language from Meta in response to European Commission's €200m fine on the company under the Digital Markets Act: it accuses commission of imposing “a multibillion-dollar tariff on Meta”.  —  www.theguardian.com/business/ 202...

A mere 0.4% to 0.6% of ... 2024 net profit. Brussels fine to Apple and Meta is barely a “licence to operate” in the EU. Europe remains delusional about the impact if its regulations. It should rather play #offense, complete the single market & become a tech leader again. #MEGA [i…

These actions signal that Brussels is more interested in extracting revenues from leading U.S. firms than building a strong transatlantic alliance that stops China's quest for global techno-economic dominance, warns @JosephVConiglio. Full statement 👇 https://itif.org/...

For reference, a €500M fine against @Apple falls just under 0,15% of the company's global annual turnover (€342,65bn in 2024). Same goes for Meta. The DMA allows for fines up to 10%
  • @jgodiasmurphy John G. Murphy on x
Imposing these fines amid so many ambiguities, however, is poor judgement. The Chamber views the DMA as bad regulatory and competition policy, and massive fines against American companies undermines the stability of our commercial relationship. /end
  • @jgodiasmurphy John G. Murphy on x
My comment on behalf of the @USChamber on the fines issued today by the European Commission: While the DMA is the EU's law, its rules are far from clear, complicating compliance. It is one thing to compel companies to further change their practices to comply with the law. 1/2

Call it what it really is: tech tariffs.
  • @auerdirk Dirk Auer on x
Big decisions and fines against Apple and Meta today. The coming hours and days will tell us whether the EU has exacerbated the ongoing trade war with the US. But either way, these decisions are not a win for European consumers or its startups. 🧵

A parking ticket. €500m fine for Apple, €200m for Meta. Or 0.14% of combined revenues in 2024 (500bn Euros). Parking ticket in London: £65. Or 0.14% of a household that earns £50k/year. A parking ticket.

Here's a Big Tech funded trade body analogizing Europe's enforcing the Digital Markets Act against Big Tech lawbreaking to Julius Caesar's overthrow of the Roman republic. Disgusting. Apple and Meta lobbying should stop far short of stoking hatred among allies nations.
  • @itifdc @itifdc on x
With €700 million in fines for Apple & Meta, the EU isn't just enforcing the DMA—it's crossing the Rubicon. Amid an already tense trade environment, the Commission's move won't sit well with the Trump administration, which has warned against exploiting U.S. innovation. [image]
