JPMorgan Chase

In June 2026, JPMorgan Chase joined Cisco, Cloudflare and Chainguard to launch Athena while restricting Hong Kong staff access to Anthropic models.

Who they are

JPMorgan Chase appears in the coverage as a major U.S. bank whose roles extend across consumer finance, investment banking, lending and technology initiatives. Stories place it as the acquirer of much of First Republic, Apple’s incoming Apple Card issuer, an adviser on OPay’s prospective U.S. IPO, a lender to data-center projects, and a participant in security and AI efforts.

The recent arc

Coverage reached its recent high in 2026Q2, shifting the focus toward the bank’s exposure to enterprise AI and the infrastructure supporting it. Bloomberg’s reports on Project Glasswing identified JPMorgan as the only bank named, while the Financial Times reported in June that it stopped Hong Kong staff from accessing Anthropic’s models after Goldman Sachs made a similar move. JPMorgan also joined Chainguard, Cisco and Cloudflare in launching Athena, a coalition intended to use AI to secure open-source software.

The same period kept JPMorgan’s traditional banking activities in view: it reportedly advised OPay alongside Citigroup and Deutsche Bank on a potential U.S. IPO, and the Wall Street Journal reported that banks including JPMorgan had difficulty distributing risk from loans for Oracle-leased Texas and Wisconsin data centers. Earlier recent coverage also marked a major consumer-finance handoff, with Apple saying JPMorgan would replace Goldman Sachs as Apple Card issuer over an expected two-year transition.

The tension

The central tension is between JPMorgan’s push to participate in AI-led finance and infrastructure and the operational, regulatory and credit controls that participation requires. It is both adjacent to peers testing Anthropic’s Mythos model, including Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, and reported to have limited access to Anthropic tools in Hong Kong; meanwhile, its Athena participation signals an effort to shape security practices around AI and open-source software. Competition with Goldman is especially visible in the Apple Card transfer and the parallel AI-control stories.

Why it matters

If this trajectory persists, JPMorgan’s influence will increasingly rest not only on balance-sheet scale and underwriting but also on how it governs AI use, finances AI-related infrastructure and captures major platform-finance relationships. The coverage suggests those activities are converging, but the Project Glasswing reporting, model-access restrictions and data-center loan-risk concerns also indicate that adoption may be constrained by oversight and risk distribution rather than determined by demand alone.
