A 2021 Epic v. Apple injunction made IAP’s exclusivity on iOS a central legal and commercial fault line, with external-payment options emerging later in the US.

Who they are

IAP, or in-app purchasing, is the payment mechanism at the center of coverage of Apple’s App Store rules and developer access to customers. It appears both as Apple’s required route for many iOS digital purchases and as the alternative to which developers, platforms, courts, and regulators have directed attention.

The recent arc

Coverage peaked around the Epic Games litigation, especially after the 2021 permanent injunction barring Apple from prohibiting links to external purchase options alongside IAP. The subsequent appeals process initially preserved Apple’s ability to keep IAP as the sole iOS in-app payment source, before the Supreme Court’s 2024 refusal to hear Apple’s and Epic’s appeals allowed the steering ruling to take effect.

The recent arc

More recent stories shift from litigation over the rule to its operational consequences. Apple approved Spotify’s US iOS update enabling other payment options in May 2025, with Patreon planning a similar move, while Apple’s 2026 App Store overhaul included bundled IAP reviews and subscription-management features. Other coverage tracks IAP as a monetization channel: Sensor Tower reported India’s mobile-app IAP revenue surpassed $300 million in Q1 2026, and Bloomberg examined high-spending users in casino-style games across Apple, Google, and Meta platforms.

The tension

The central conflict is Apple’s control over iOS payments and commissions versus developers’ ability to steer users to outside checkout systems and retain a direct customer relationship. Epic, Spotify, Patreon, and earlier challengers such as HEY frame IAP as a gatekeeper, while Apple’s legal position has been that it can collect commission even when developers use competing payment platforms; Google’s Play Store fee changes show that the issue extends beyond Apple’s ecosystem.

Why it matters

If external-payment pathways continue to become usable in important markets, IAP may evolve from an exclusive checkout rail into one option among several, weakening a key point of platform control while raising new questions about discovery, disclosures, subscriptions, and customer support. Apple’s continuing investment in App Store subscription and IAP tooling suggests IAP remains strategically important, but the eventual balance will depend on how Apple implements court- and regulator-driven changes and whether developers can convert those permissions into meaningful off-platform purchasing.

IAP has appeared in 83 articles since 2017-12. Coverage peaked in 2022Q3 with 8 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Apple, the App Store, App Store, Google.
