Amazon debuts AWS Shield, its Cloudflare competitor, to protect against DDoS attacks, and offers two tiers; basic version will be on by default

DDoS denotes distributed denial-of-service attacks, a disruption technique that recurs in coverage of platform outages, botnet operations, cybercrime services, state-linked campaigns, and the defensive work of infrastructure providers such as Cloudflare and Microsoft.
Recent coverage has centered on conspicuous service disruptions and contested explanations. In August 2024, Elon Musk attributed the failed Donald Trump interview on X Spaces to a “massive DDoS attack,” while reporting from The Verge cited an X source saying the crash was not caused by DDoS. That same period also included the Internet Archive being taken offline amid a DDoS attack after a breach, making availability and attribution inseparable themes.
The story has since moved toward both the scale of attack traffic and its institutional consequences. Microsoft reported mitigating a 15.7 Tbps Aisuru attack against an Azure endpoint, followed by Cloudflare’s disclosure of a 31.4 Tbps Aisuru/Kimwolf attack; meanwhile, Archive.today’s alleged use in directing an attack led English-language Wikipedia to ban it. The latest reports concern Bluesky’s continuing outages, which it attributes to a sophisticated DDoS attack while saying it found no evidence that private data was accessed.
Coverage repeatedly circles the gap between an outage claim and a verified attack: X’s competing accounts over the Trump interview illustrate how DDoS can be both a technical diagnosis and a disputed public explanation. At the same time, Mirai’s role in the Dyn outage and the more recent Aisuru/Kimwolf disclosures show defenders such as Cloudflare and Microsoft contending with botnets whose traffic volumes test the resilience of shared internet infrastructure.
If the trajectory holds, DDoS coverage will increasingly concern whether major online services and civic information systems can maintain availability under botnet-driven disruption, rather than isolated website outages alone. The Bluesky, Internet Archive, Azure, and Cloudflare cases also suggest that transparent attribution and mitigation evidence will matter more as public claims about attacks become harder to distinguish from ordinary technical failure.
