Cortana

A $242 million patent verdict in 2024 and Windows support shutdown in 2023 recast Cortana coverage as the aftermath of Microsoft’s abandoned assistant strategy.

Who they are

Cortana is Microsoft’s voice assistant, introduced in coverage as a Windows 10 feature and later extended to mobile and Outlook. Its stories track Microsoft’s attempts to make an assistant span PCs, phones, productivity software, and connected devices, before the product’s role narrowed and support was retired.

The recent arc

The recent coverage is defined less by new Cortana capabilities than by replacement and cleanup. Microsoft said it would end Cortana app support on Windows 10 and Windows 11 in late 2023 while positioning its AI efforts as replacements; coverage around Microsoft’s adoption of OpenAI’s plugin standard and Satya Nadella’s assessment that Cortana, Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant “don’t work” framed that shift as a broader reset in assistants.

In 2024, a jury found Cortana infringed an IPA Technologies patent and awarded $242 million against Microsoft, which said it would appeal. The 2025 return of voice-assistant coverage came through Copilot Voice, the “Hey, Copilot!” wake word, and Mico, Microsoft’s expressive Copilot voice character, rather than through a Cortana revival.

The tension

Cortana’s coverage centers on Microsoft’s failure to maintain a competitive consumer assistant against Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, despite an earlier Amazon-Microsoft plan to let Alexa and Cortana summon one another. The product also faced the harder problem of usefulness and trust: Microsoft refocused it toward workplace conversations, while contractor transcription of Cortana audio exposed the human-review practices behind voice-assistant training.

Why it matters

Cortana’s trajectory shows how Microsoft’s AI interface strategy moved from a standalone branded assistant toward Copilot embedded across Windows and productivity services. If that trajectory holds, the key question is whether Copilot’s generative-AI and voice features solve the utility problems that Nadella associated with the earlier assistant generation, while avoiding the privacy, legal, and platform-competition issues that followed Cortana.

Cortana has appeared in 141 articles since 2015-01. Coverage peaked in 2019Q4 with 4 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Microsoft, Windows 10, Alexa, Amazon.
