Who they are

Cortana is Microsoft’s voice assistant, introduced in coverage as a Windows 10 feature and later extended to mobile and Outlook. Its stories track Microsoft’s attempts to make an assistant span PCs, phones, productivity software, and connected devices, before the product’s role narrowed and support was retired.

The recent arc

The recent coverage is defined less by new Cortana capabilities than by replacement and cleanup. Microsoft said it would end Cortana app support on Windows 10 and Windows 11 in late 2023 while positioning its AI efforts as replacements; coverage around Microsoft’s adoption of OpenAI’s plugin standard and Satya Nadella’s assessment that Cortana, Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant “don’t work” framed that shift as a broader reset in assistants.

Why it matters

Cortana’s trajectory shows how Microsoft’s AI interface strategy moved from a standalone branded assistant toward Copilot embedded across Windows and productivity services. If that trajectory holds, the key question is whether Copilot’s generative-AI and voice features solve the utility problems that Nadella associated with the earlier assistant generation, while avoiding the privacy, legal, and platform-competition issues that followed Cortana.
