Google’s 2023 Chromebook Plus push set premium hardware standards, but Steam support ended in 2026 as game access shifted toward GeForce Now streaming.

Who they are

Chromebook is Google’s ChromeOS-based laptop platform, appearing in coverage as an ecosystem spanning hardware from vendors including Acer, Samsung and Lenovo, education deployments, and software efforts designed to broaden what web-centric laptops can do. Google is the central platform steward, setting update policy, launching Chromebook Plus and adding ChromeOS features.

The recent arc

The clearest recent product phase began with Google’s October 2023 launch of Chromebook Plus, a premium category defined by minimum hardware such as an IPS 1080p display, 1080p webcam, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. That was followed by Google’s 10-year update commitment beginning in 2024, explicitly tied to keeping devices viable for schools, and by new Samsung and Lenovo models with ChromeOS AI features in October 2024. The coverage consequently moved beyond inexpensive web laptops toward longevity, more capable specifications and differentiated features.

The tension

Coverage repeatedly circles the effort to make Chromebooks credible as fuller laptops while retaining their low-cost, browser-first identity. Google and Valve’s Steam alpha for select high-performance Chromebooks, introduced in 2022, represented one route to that expansion, but its planned January 2026 shutdown exposed its limits; Nvidia and Google’s GeForce Now Fast Pass instead emphasizes streamed access to PC libraries. Microsoft remains the direct strategic counterpoint, with Windows 11 SE aimed at low-cost laptops competing with Chromebooks before Microsoft planned to end its support in 2026.

Why it matters

If Google can pair long support windows, premium baseline hardware and cloud-delivered applications, Chromebook could become less dependent on the traditional low-end education-device framing and more durable across schools and general use. But the end of native Steam support suggests that higher-end use cases may rely on partners and connectivity rather than a self-sufficient local software catalog. The 2026 Indonesian court case involving a Chromebook school-procurement contract also shows that public-sector adoption can bring governance scrutiny alongside scale.
