A $7.1M BTT token sale and Tron's acquisition shifted coverage from BitTorrent's media products toward blockchain monetization, before a 25-year retrospective revived its piracy-era legacy.

Who they are

BitTorrent is the peer-to-peer technology company launched by Bram Cohen, appearing in coverage as both an internet-distribution platform shaped by piracy and a company that tried to extend its network into communications, streaming and, after its acquisition by Tron, tokenized download incentives.

The recent arc

The major late-2010s turn came with Tron’s 2018 acquisition of BitTorrent, reported by Variety as a deal whose filings suggested roughly $126 million in cash. Coverage then concentrated in early 2019 on the BTT token: BitTorrent said users could trade tokens for faster downloads, and its Binance Launchpad sale raised $7.1 million through 50 billion BTT sold in under 15 minutes.

The tension

Coverage repeatedly centers on the contradiction between BitTorrent’s decentralized architecture and the content it enabled: media piracy helped drive adoption while also leaving the company comparatively insulated from direct legal liability. That dispute spilled into broadband policy when Ajit Pai’s net-neutrality proposal invoked the FCC’s 2008 action against Comcast for blocking BitTorrent traffic; meanwhile, Tron sought to make the network economically legible through BTT.

Why it matters

BitTorrent’s record shows how a foundational distribution protocol can remain relevant through policy battles and ownership changes even as its consumer-product experiments fade from the headlines. If Tron’s token-incentive model continues to define the business, its significance will rest on whether blockchain rewards can strengthen peer-to-peer participation without intensifying the longstanding scrutiny around piracy, network discrimination and platform responsibility.

BitTorrent has appeared in 43 articles since 2015-01. Coverage peaked in 2016Q2 with 9 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Android, Tron, BitTorrent Now, Comcast.
