Walmart and Alphabet-owned Wing also selected Atlanta for a drone-delivery expansion, and Atlanta-based embedded-payments company Rainforest raised a $29 million Series B.

The tension

Atlanta coverage centers on whether the city can become a durable platform for automated services while managing their operational and infrastructure costs. Waymo’s Uber-exclusive model contrasts with Lyft’s May Mobility partnership, while Waymo service limits during flooding and ahead of immigration-policy protests show that robotaxi availability remains dependent on local conditions. Microsoft’s data-center expansion arrives as opposition to such projects is becoming a wider U.S. constraint.

Why it matters

If these deployments persist, Atlanta could become a meaningful proving ground where autonomous ride-hailing, drone delivery and AI-computing infrastructure develop alongside one another rather than as isolated pilots. The outcome remains uncertain: service interruptions, public resistance to infrastructure and competition between Uber-linked Waymo and Lyft-linked May Mobility could determine whether the city becomes a scaled market or remains a collection of bounded launches.
