Internal memo: Meta plans to eliminate Instagram's Shopping page and test a simpler and less personalized version known as Tab Lite over the next few months

Instagram is planning to drastically scale back its shopping features, the company told Instagram staffers on Tuesday …

The Information Sylvia Varnham O'Regan

Context & Ripple Effects

Instagram spent four years building shopping into core real estate: the 2020 layout redesign gave it a dedicated navigation-bar tab alongside Reels, and internal documents had Meta prioritizing direct product sales across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger through 2022, partly as a hedge against Apple's ATT changes. That bet is now being unwound from the top down.

The memo reported by The Information says the Shopping page itself will be eliminated, with a stripped-down 'Tab Lite' — simpler and less personalized — tested over the next few months. For a feature line that began with the 2018 Explore channel and Stories tags, this is a demotion of commerce from headline surface to background utility.

First-order effects

  • Brands and merchants who optimized for the personalized Shopping tab lose their primary storefront placement on Instagram within months, with only a less-personalized Tab Lite experiment as the successor surface.
  • Instagram's own merchandising assets — curated collections, brand carousels, the @Shop account featured in the 2020 hub redesign — lose their dedicated home when the page is eliminated.

Second-order effects

  • Merchant discovery shifts back toward feed and Reels placements, pushing sellers toward paid distribution and reinforcing Meta's advertising-led revenue model over a first-party commerce channel.
  • Competing social platforms still investing in in-app checkout gain a differentiation argument against Instagram at exactly the moment its shopping commitment visibly narrows.

Third-order effects

  • If Tab Lite sticks, it marks a structural retreat from the post-ATT thesis that platforms should own the full purchase journey — social commerce settling into an assist role (discovery and tagging) rather than a destination role.
  • Navigation-bar slots become zero-sum again: whatever replaces the shopping tab competes with Reels for the same prime placement, making Meta's format priorities legible in UI rather than memos.

The trend: Social platforms are scaling back owned commerce destinations after ATT-era bets underdelivered, reallocating prime app real estate toward engagement formats instead.

This is surprising, tho there was little evidence of traction: “The shopping shift is a major reversal for CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who over the past two years had made it a top priority to turn the Facebook and Instagram apps into shopping destinations” https://www.theinformation.co…

Scoop: Instagram will remove its existing Shop page as it tests a simpler version called “Tab Lite.” It's also testing removing the button that directs users to shops, with tentative plans to scrap the button altogether next March. https://www.theinformation.com/ ...

And with ATT, on site shopping was a way to close the loop on transactions. This was pushed hard throughout 2021. https://twitter.com/...

This suggests that small shops and boutique producers who sell through Instagram are going to be screwed... and/or that their bespoke Etsy-esque offerings simply don't generate enough ad dollars to warrant preserving their presence on the platform. #InstagramWasQVC https://twitte…

Oct 2021 “Zuckerberg told analysts last week that “building a full-fledged commerce platform is a multi-year journey.” Raised the question was commerce not working. Or is the threat of TikTok/SFV so existential they can't dedicate the time and resources to making commerce work?

@modestproposal1 The IG shopping product itself is *really* bad - so it seems to be mostly execution. Issue is fixing it so hard (higher performing leaders won't risk their career on a turn-around). OTOH.. Google Shopping is absolutely crushing it after several years of failed ta…

Instagram pulling back on shopping, where attribution has been shattered by Apple, to focus on Reels - where there is no proven ad model/attribution? https://www.theinformation.com/ ...

This also is another question mark on the idea that discovery platforms can move down funnel. TRIP tried and failed with Instant Book, but there were questions about execution and channel conflicts. Instagram seemed like a natural fit, and yet consumers didn't respond.

Instagram has always seemed like the “digital mall” to me. The efficacy of driving commerce, both natively in feed and through ads, made it seem natural to add conversion on site. This would also have the added advantage of severing direct link b/w time spent and monetization.

@modestproposal1 For me, my biggest need with Instagram commerce is finding out exactly what products someone else is showing in their images (ie what is that influencer wearing?) I don't think Instagram ever solved that. Instead it was focused on your own content.
