The new tabs cap a year-long commerce push: July brought a redesigned shopping hub with collections and curated brand selections, and October extended shopping tools to IGTV globally with Reels promised next. Promoting Shop and Reels into the bottom navigation bar makes both surfaces one tap away for every user, not just those who seek them out.
The move also lands mid-ramp toward monetization — a month later Facebook would launch Shopping in Instagram Reels, letting businesses and creators tag products directly in short video. Notably, the corpus shows the experiment was later unwound: by early 2023 Instagram planned to replace the Shop tab with a Reels button, returning Compose to center.
First-order effects
Businesses and creators get permanent, default placement for product discovery in the app's most valuable real estate, ahead of the Reels shopping rollout already announced.
Reels gains a persistent entry point alongside the feed, sharpening Instagram's answer to short-video rivals at the exact moment its shopping tooling is being wired into that format.
Second-order effects
Brands gain an incentive to produce Reels specifically, since tagging products there (launched globally in December) plus a dedicated tab turns short video into a storefront rather than a reach play.
Competitors in short video face pressure to match the commerce integration, because Instagram is bundling distribution (the tab), format (Reels), and checkout-adjacent tagging into one loop.
Third-order effects
Navigation bars are revealed as reversible strategic levers, not fixed furniture: the 2023 plan to drop the Shop tab shows platforms will re-carve prime UI when monetization priorities shift, so merchants building on a tab should treat placement as cyclical.
If the pattern holds, social apps converge on a structure where video and commerce share the top-level interface, making the distinction between content surface and shopping surface increasingly formal rather than functional.
The trend: Social platforms are converting their navigation bars into contested commerce-and-short-video real estate, with placements added and removed as each company's monetization priorities cycle.

@instagram Reels isn't even unique, the vast majority of its content are ones saved from TikTok. I highly doubt anyone will welcome the Shop tab, people have adapted to having Activity and New Post in the Navigation Bar so it's an unwelcome change.
