Twitter is testing an edit button, giving some Twitter Blue subscribers 30 minutes to make edits later in September 2022; edit labels include a complete history

Tom Warren / The Verge :

The Verge Tom Warren

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter had signaled in April that an edit option was in development for Blue Labs, while site code pointed to a model that preserves prior versions as separate posts in an auditable edit trail. The test turns that long-requested capability into a defined subscriber feature rather than a general-platform change.

Related coverage shows the feature moving from testing to a New Zealand-first release and then to Blue subscribers in additional markets. That rollout path makes the edit button both a product-control experiment and a benefit attached to Twitter Blue.

First-order effects

  • Twitter Blue subscribers in the test receive a 30-minute window for multiple tweet edits, while visible labels and full edit history preserve the original record for readers.
  • Twitter gains a new, concrete Blue-only feature to test before broader availability.

Second-order effects

  • The version-history design limits the ability to silently rewrite posts, making transparency a product requirement alongside the convenience of editing.
  • Twitter's phased Blue rollout makes subscriber access vary by market, concentrating early feedback and feature value among the initial eligible countries.

Third-order effects

  • If Twitter continues reserving high-demand posting controls for Blue, subscription tiers become a more central way the platform differentiates user experience rather than merely adding ancillary perks.
  • Persistent edit histories point toward social platforms treating post changes as traceable records, balancing editable publishing with accountability for prior wording.

The trend: Social platforms are packaging previously universal publishing controls into paid tiers while adding provenance features to preserve trust in altered posts.

This is a test of Twitter's new Edit Tweet feature. This is only a test

Unless twitter massively upscales the PEOPLE side of abuse and moderation, the edit button will cause FAR more problems than it solves. What is Twitter going to do when a tweet describes me as “ducking bigger”? The “you” who will be ok, is brands, not people. https://twitter.com/…

Just a heads up...y'all will continue to see posts from me with errors because I've learned 2 things from not being able to edit: 1. Y'all understand me regardless 2. Treating social media posts like peer-reviewed papers is hella classiest and exclusionary https://twitter.com/...

Twitter has long had a superior edit button called “delete” which allows you to remove a bad tweet and repost a better one without anyone being confused about what happened.

“Edited Tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label so it's clear to readers that the original Tweet has been modified. Tapping the label will take viewers to the Tweet's Edit History, which includes past versions of the Tweet.” Thanks, Twitter! https://blog.twitter.com…

@fmbutt ... FB alerts users if a post is edited (so you go see if fraud occurred). Not many people edit posts on FB. Things are faster/more viral on Twitter though. I agree it can be problematic. Most people wouldn't torch the social capital. Outliers who don't care are the issue…
  • @caseynewton Casey Newton on x
@riptari ... For sure — I believe they have placed various limits on this though in response to the abuse
  • @stevesi Steven Sinofsky on x
@mariachong ... I just don't see FBs experience with edit to be comparable to the weaponization that will happen on Twitter. FB is a totally different vibe as the kids say (not about FB because they don't care).
  • @riptari @riptari on x
@CaseyNewton ... Editing the names of Facebook Pages/Groups is a common bait & switch troll farm tactic - eg amplifying a political message by turning a cute cat page into right wing propaganda et.
  • @caseynewton Casey Newton on x
@stevesi ... FB is 10x bigger than Twitter and was used with some success to influence the 2016 election. And editing posts had nothing to do with it! Even Russian troll farms couldn't find a way to make it useful
  • @xtina1229 @xtina1229 on x
This is why you should have maybe 30-60 seconds to edit a tweet, not after it has gone viral. Just long enough for you to realize you typed your instead of you're and look like a fucking idiot. https://twitter.com/...
  • @racheltobac Rachel Tobac on x
Great coverage by @washingtonpost @WillOremus. The edit button is particularly dangerous on Twitter bc tweets influence markets, nat security, & voting at a faster rate than most tools. We don't need additional disinformation risk ahead of next election. https://www.washingtonpos…
  • @inafried Ina Fried on x
@CaseyNewton Yep. I asked them about this. Because I can see how to exploit the feature as it currently stands and I'm no evil genius. OK, I am, but I'm an evil genius who uses her power for good. No new rules for now, but they are keeping a close eye, I am told.
  • @broderick Ryan Broderick on x
I agree that disinfo/misinfo fears are a bit overblown, but I also think that people lie and make shit up on every website and if having an edit button is what it takes for people to stop treating tweets like some bastion of objective truth, so be it. https://twitter.com/...
  • @chrismessina @chrismessina on x
@CaseyNewton Seeing loads of hot takes that ignore the product thinking behind Twitter's approach (duh, because that's more fun). That you'll only get 30m to make a change, and that the tweet was edited will be clearly marked, seem to address many of these concerns. https://twitt…

I doubt the old Tweet edits would be swapped in-place with the new ones There'll just be an indicator that there's a new version of the Tweet. Not entirely sure if the likes/retweets would carry over too https://twitter.com/...
  • @caseynewton Casey Newton on x
I continue to think these fears are overblown, but Twitter should consider explicitly forbidding using the feature this way, and suspend or ban accounts that do it https://twitter.com/...
  • @cherylrofer Cheryl Rofer on x
With editing now being tried out by @TwitterSupport, I have to modify my policies. 1) No retweeting of accounts I don't know until they are at least 30 minutes old. 2) Additional care in retweeting accounts I trust. One of the virtues of Twitter is its speed. Or used to be.
