Twitter starts rolling out an edit button to Twitter Blue subscribers in the US, a few days after giving it to subscribers in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand

The Verge Jay Peters

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter has been walking the edit button toward general Blue availability all fall: it began testing the feature in early September with a 30-minute edit window and a complete edit history shown on the label, then confirmed the five-edits-in-30-minutes limit with New Zealand getting first access. Three days ago it went live for Blue subscribers in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (the initial rollout), making today's US arrival a fast-follow rather than a new capability.

First-order effects

  • US Twitter Blue subscribers gain the ability to edit tweets up to five times within 30 minutes, with each edited tweet carrying a label and complete history visible to everyone who sees it.
  • The edit button becomes the most visible perk yet on a $2.99/month US subscription that launched with Scroll's ad-free articles and an undo button — giving Blue its clearest feature differentiator since launch.

Second-order effects

  • Non-subscribers who encounter edited tweets now see the edit label and history, meaning the feature changes how the whole timeline reads, not just what paying users can do.
  • Twitter's staged country-by-country rollout gives it a live testing pattern for gating marquee features behind Blue, raising the bar for what the subscription must include to justify itself.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, Twitter is normalizing subscription-gated core features with built-in transparency (edit labels, full history) — a template other platforms could adopt as free tiers stop absorbing every capability.

The trend: Twitter is converting once-universal features into subscription perks, using small-market rollouts as the proving ground before wider release.

I just want to make sure we're all on the same page that 30fps is the best frame rate (this is an edited tweet. You're welcome) https://twitter.com/...

The ultimate Twitter gaslighting was to make us wait to edit tweets so we'd pay $5/month for something everyone else does for free

I will gladly eat crow for this, but I think the edit button might help curtail some viral lies. If you tweet something you later learn is false, and it's still viral anyway, you can correct it instead of the current will-they/won't-they delete dance. https://twitter.com/...

$TWTR has edit button! So you can pay $4.99/month to edit tweets. ...But it let's everyone see all previous versions of your revised tweets anyway. Or you can just keep deleting the stupider ones for free. Like the rest of us. https://twitter.com/...

*slaps hood* you can fit so much misinformation in 30 minutes of editing (you can't, it will probably be fine) https://twitter.com/...
