In Russia, a planned partial Facebook shutdown; Twitter appears to be shut in Moscow too; media watchdog on a warpath against any media reporting anything from non-state sources about this conflict. Russia is being cut off from the truth https://twitter.com/...

Ordinary Russians are using @Meta's apps to express themselves and organize for action. We want them to continue to make their voices heard, share what's happening, and organize through Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. https://t.co/FjTovgslCe

Russia's federal censor says it will begin throttling access to Facebook in retaliation for the network's decision to limit access to the accounts of Russian media outlets now spreading false reports about the invasion of Ukraine. https://t.me/...

“Yesterday, Russian authorities ordered us to stop the independent fact-checking and labelling of content posted on FB by 4 Russian state-owned media organisations. We refused. As a result, they have announced they will be restricting the use of our services.” Fact-checks hurt. h…

The tension btw rule enforcement and govt blocking that disrupts info flow for millions is extremely difficult for social media companies to navigate. I've made the case to enforce regardless of pushback risk (& won). It's a position, like the others, w/ major downsides. https://…

Facebook is now cutting Russian state media off advertising and ad revenue completely. The biggest blowback will fall on ordinary Russian users - expect Russia to make accessing Facebook harder or even block it entirely in response https://twitter.com/...

That said, all social companies should have an actor-based policy to address individuals and units responsible for atrocity crimes. Making those judgments will be slower than some want, but way faster than international courts. Don't let humanity's worst use your tools.

Here's FB discussing that tension in the first tweet. They're trying to establish goals and maintain room to maneuver. This will produce unsatisfying public statements. Nonetheless, publicly disclosing the pressure is important and positive. https://twitter.com/...

Seems like Facebook would ban the misinformation purveyors. But you only ban your political opponents and for no reason, so carry on! https://twitter.com/...

If Russia is limiting the use of social media platforms for citizens while simultaneously using them to disseminate misinformation, why does it get to use them at all? https://twitter.com/...

Clegg says Russian authorities “ordered” Meta to “stop the independent fact-checking and labelling” of content on Facebook for Russian-controlled outlets. Clegg says the company refused and “as a result, they have announced they will be restricting the use of our services.” https…

This message seems like it should be coming from the CEO, but Clegg's promotion is working as intended. He bears the brunt of political decision-making, while Zuckerberg, who hasn't said anything about Ukraine, gets to focus on “the metaverse.” https://twitter.com/...

Russia will “restrict” Facebook over “censorship” of pro-Kremlin media. Is it a game-changer? No. But it could contribute to the creeping sense of living in a pariah state, especially among Muscovites https://www.reuters.com/...

Russia is limiting access to Facebook after Meta placed restrictions on Kremlin backed media. Interesting to take a look at the various social media sites (Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, etc) to understand their wartime moderation and user safety policies. https://t.co/o7RS93xejY

1/ We are now prohibiting Russian state media from running ads or monetizing on our platform anywhere in the world. We also continue to apply labels to additional Russian state media. These changes have already begun rolling out and will continue into the weekend.
  • @carnage4life @carnage4life on x
Meta is applying labels to content from Russian state and limiting them from running ads on its platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc). Would love to see other popular social media platforms like YouTube & TikTok also step up as Meta & Twitter have. https://twitter.com/...

1/ In response to the unfolding military conflict in Ukraine, we have established a Special Operations Center to respond in real time. It is staffed by experts (including native speakers) so we can closely monitor the situation and act as fast as possible.

Facebook cutting off data access, disbanding the CrowdTangle team, and standing in the way of research now has a direct effect on the ability to uncover Russian information operating during this offensive. Researchers don't give up but we need to acknowledge this consequence.
  • @broderick Ryan Broderick on x
YouTube continuing to allow Russia Today to monetize their channel amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine is exactly the same decision Facebook made last year when it let insurrectionists organize using Facebook Events. This is a company prioritizing profit and engagement over ethics.…

Russia begins to restrict/block Facebook. Under the pretext of “protecting local media”. Facebook allegedly “violated the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens” and allegedly it reported “23 cases of censorship since October 2020”. https://rkn.gov.ru/... https://twitter.com/...

“Ordinary Russians” do deserve the right to express themselves freely across social media. But Facebook spent years profiting off of Russian disinformation, fake accounts, and bot networks. Facebook played a role in how we got here today. https://twitter.com/...

This would also apply to CGTN and the rest of PRC state media that have really expanded their reach due to the Hong Kong and COVID crises. Why should FB/YT/TW give them tons of boost when their citizens are cut off from dissenting voices on these platforms? Time to clean house.

Note: 1) This should not apply to domestic pro-Russian voices. Tucker Carlson is an American problem and he, Fox News (and their lobbyists) have the right to be wrong. 2) US sanctions to silence RT would be problematic, which is why voluntary steps by platforms are important.

A decade ago, Facebook would have championed the use of its platforms to voice pro-Democratic sentiments as it did with the Arab Spring. Now it's a much larger company with much more baggage that's in the unenviable position of trying not to make anyone mad.
  • @alexstamos Alex Stamos on x
    1) It's appropriate for American companies to pick sides in geopolitical conflicts, and this should be an easy call. 2) A more neutral standard would be to block state media from countries that block your platform. In either case, the RT Cinematic Universe should be banned. https…
