@katieharbath It is interesting. Not a fan of CNN quoting the report saying Facebook approved a “significant number” without specifying. Is 1 significant? 5?

@katieharbath That's from here, btw. Report would be stronger if they provided a repo of the fake ads. https://cybersecurityfordemocracy.org/ ...

Meta says documentation in The Wire's article alleging Instagram removed posts flagged by a BJP member in India without oversight “appears to be fabricated”

@JeffHorwitz Where to even begin with this story?! X-check has nothing to do with the ability to report posts. The posts in question were surfaced for review by automated systems, ...

This. Start with this. But (and this is the hard part) guarantee that the accounting is appropriately granular by defining the units of disclosure. This will be a royal pain, but only way to make it work. https://twitter.com/...

Some teenagers say French social networking app Yubo, which has 18M downloads in the US, ignored reports that the Uvalde shooter threatened violence on the app

Young people who met the alleged gunman online said he had threatened to kidnap, rape or kill.

I don't know how viral the Buffalo video is or whether it is being shaped adversarially by supporters of the shooter, as was the case after Christchurch. These are things to watch for. 5/n

Live broadcasts and shared videos of mass shootings again raise questions about social networks' responsibilities in curbing violent and hateful content

Gunmen say they are influenced by online screeds and broadcasts of past shootings.  Do social media sites have a responsibility to rein in hateful and violent content?

@sanjanah They did, ultimately, take extraordinary steps in Myanmar. People understandably focus on FBs past mistakes there. In doing so, they miss an opportunity to improve things moving forward in other places. Your question should be whether those Myanmar steps should be used elsewhere.

Sources: Apple and Google removed Kremlin critic Navalny's app in September after FSB agents came to top executives' homes and threatened to take them to prison

Russian agents came to the home of Google's top executive in Moscow to deliver a frightening ultimatum last September …

This one isn't that complicated. “Meta” content policy prohibits attacks based on protected characteristics, incl nationality. That includes a Ukrainian saying, “We should kill the Russians in Mariupol,” or some such. They don't want to take that down. Hence this clarification. https://twitter.com/...

@sanjanah You're of course right that geo-fencing is always a mess. My read of the statement is that its about Russians in Ukraine, not just statements from Ukrainians. I think we have to give countries & companies space to take some extraordinary measures here that dont create precedent.

There's plenty of space on the calendar to point out Meta's failures. But today is not the day. Right now, many people there are working really hard to keep info flowing for everyday Russians that need it. That's important. Think of those folks today; rag on FB tomorrow.

@JeffHorwitz @CaseyNewton For sure. That content in that pool is definitely an interesting/important question. And none of this gets at the recommendations for how you build your actual network. Or balancing views across all surfaces. Still, I think framing as you've done here better-sizes the question.

Safe to say that Meta's efforts to refute the idea that Facebook amplifies divisive political content are not going exactly as it would have hoped.

Good move. Comes w/ risk. Will Russia block FB? Follow up w/ a policy to remove government actors responsible for atrocity crimes. The bar should be very high for companies 2 take aggressive steps against governments. But we've clearly reached that threshold. This is positive. https://twitter.com/...

TikTok confirms it has shut down access to Russian sites RT and Sputnik in Europe following requests from individual governments and the European Union

Facebook and TikTok said Monday that the companies would shut down access to Kremlin-controlled media sites RT and Sputnik in Europe, setting the stage for retaliation from Russia.

To answer my own question: I don't think Russia will block until its a restriction in Russia proper.

Here's FB discussing that tension in the first tweet. They're trying to establish goals and maintain room to maneuver. This will produce unsatisfying public statements. Nonetheless, publicly disclosing the pressure is important and positive. https://twitter.com/...

That said, all social companies should have an actor-based policy to address individuals and units responsible for atrocity crimes. Making those judgments will be slower than some want, but way faster than international courts. Don't let humanity's worst use your tools.
