Snap reports its first quarterly net profit, with $1.3B in Q4 revenue, up 42% YoY, and $23M net income; FY 2021 revenue grew 64% to $4.1B; stock rises 40%+

Lauren Feiner / CNBC :

CNBC Lauren Feiner

Context & Ripple Effects

Snap's first quarterly profit extends a 2021 progression from its first quarter of positive free cash flow to a sharply smaller Q2 net loss. Q4 revenue of $1.3B and full-year revenue of $4.1B show that the company reached profitability while maintaining strong top-line growth.

First-order effects

  • Snap moves from reporting losses to a $23M quarterly net profit, while investors immediately reprice the result with the stock up more than 40%.
  • The Q4 result gives Snap a profitability milestone alongside 42% year-over-year revenue growth, rather than growth alone.

Second-order effects

  • Snap's earlier cash-flow and loss improvements now read as a sustained financial trajectory, raising the importance of subsequent quarterly revenue growth and margins for investors.
  • The sharp stock response makes earnings execution more central to Snap's market narrative, increasing scrutiny of whether revenue growth can continue without returning to losses.

Third-order effects

  • If Snap can preserve profitability as revenue expands, the company shifts from a growth-and-loss story toward one judged on the durability of its advertising-scale economics.

The trend: Digital platforms are increasingly being valued on their ability to convert rapid revenue growth into repeatable cash flow and profits.

This is the craziest single day stock move I have ever seen. $SNAP started the day down 23.5%, then shot up 58.3% after the market closed. Swinging between a $39B and a $60B market cap in a single day. https://twitter.com/...

@jason_kint no. the stock price going up does not tell you anything about the intent and morality of the company nor its people. “because they actually care about their user” cannot be inferred from stock price action

The 17% decline that $SNAP endured yesterday was a pretty clear overreaction given that $FB's drop was partly driven by declining MAU and flat DAU. The stock is up *40%* after hours on Q4 earnings. https://twitter.com/...

Amazing, good for Snap. They're significantly less dependent on tracking compared who Facebook who gets a majority of its data from third parties according to a regulatory investigation. This tale of two stocks in 24hrs absolutely demonstrates this. Congrats @evanspiegel. https:/…
