OpenAI CEO Sam Altman departs the company and leaves its board after a board review found he wasn't “consistently candid in his communications with the board”

The larger question (for me) isn't if Threads will “work,” but if the world wants another social media platform.  Anecdotally, a lot of people I know have deleted Twitter and Instagram and FB from their phones because they're just burned out on social.  I think ultimately, the DNA of what this thing becomes will determine its survival.

Hands-on with Threads: fairly basic text-based messaging app, log in via Instagram, no hashtags, can't search for anything other than user handles, and more

Programming note: I really was trying to take a vacation, but this felt like it was worth the one-day interruption.

Donald Trump says he sees “a lot of problems at Twitter”, doesn't see any reason to return, and plans to stick to Truth Social

these decisions affect people and they shouldn't be up to @elonmusk's personal whims or a random Twitter poll about whether or not Trump, who incited a violent insurrection when he...

Twitter employees used to joke: “Twitter is the company that can't kill itself.” Everyone speculating Twitter might die now, it's not happening. It's like the jellyfish “Turritopsis dohrnii” which is ‘biologically immortal.’ This chaos is just part of its DNA & how it thrives.

Sources: some internal estimates show 1,200+ full-time Twitter employees resigned on November 17; Twitter previously laid off ~3,700 of 7,500 staff

Mr. Musk sent emails on Friday asking to learn about Twitter's underlying technology as key infrastructure teams have been decimated.

(Fun aside: the fake accounts actually ended up luring the *real* celebs to Twitter. Someone started a fake Shaq account, and when real Shaq heard about it, he signed up as @the_real_shaq. This also led to lots of famous people putting “Real” in their username — ahem, Donald.)

An internal Twitter log shows that more than 140,000 accounts had signed up for the new Twitter Blue as of November 10

The social media service, which is undergoing changes from its new owner Elon Musk, has descended into a messy swirl of spoof messages and parody accounts.

A short thread about Blue Check Marks. In the early days of Twitter, waaaaaaaay before the celebs and the crypto bros and the pundithinkfluencers were on here, part of the fun of the platform was the fake accounts.

There was @DarthVader and @God and countless others — and they were amazing. It didn't take long before the fun accounts became parody fake accounts of real people.

(Last note: One possible solution to the Blue Check Marks For All is to make a system where people are verified as being who they say they are, and when they get a blue badge they can no longer change their account name... but that would cost a lot more than $8 to implement.)

Anyway, where Twitter screwed up, was that over time being verified became a form of online feudalism, where there were the Check Mark People, and those rest of surfs who couldn't get verified.
