Joe Rogan posts a video to Instagram defending booking contentious guests, apologizes to Spotify for the backlash, and says he may book more “experts”

Lots of audio platform-related news over the past week. Shruti Shekar / Android Central : Spotify's ‘misinformation honeymoon’ is over, the whip has been cracked Tweets: Joe Rogan / @joerogan : My thoughts on the controversy with @spotify https://www.instagram.com/... Daniel Ek / @eldsjal : There's been a lot of conversation about information regarding COVID-19 on Spotify. We've heard the criticism and we're implementing changes to help combat misinformation. https://newsroom.spotify.com/ ... Ryan Broderick / @broderick : Sorry, but all of this Joe Rogan/Spotify stuff is making me feel insane! This isn't about content moderation. This isn't about censorship. Spotify is a publisher and they publish Joe Rogan. There's literally no other way to look at this. https://www.garbageday.email/ ... https://twitter.com/... Trisha Greenhalgh / @trishgreenhalgh : You're currently part of the problem. Show some moral courage. Fire the misinformation spreaders. Acknowledge the damage you have enabled. https://twitter.com/... Dr Julia Grace Patterson / @jujuliagrace : We're currently running a project about health disinformation during COVID-19. It is incredibly dangerous. Vulnerable people absorb lies and it leads to deaths. We're not having a conversation; we're demanding better. @EveryDoctorUK https://twitter.com/... Renee DiResta / @noupside : “Misinformation” as a term has a scope creep problem. It's become a catchall for rumors, propaganda, disinformation, issues on which there is simply not yet consensus... and also, yes, false things. These issues have different dynamics and solutions. Renee DiResta / @noupside : Platforms need to have policies in place that establish their values on this front in advance, but more importantly, they need to be thinking about what they incentivize and how they curate—because they are defining the structures. That is also a profound responsibility. Matt Welch / @mattwelch : “that give them a platform” is a tellingly wrong way of looking at this. More like, “that pay them a premium to be the exclusive distributor of content that was already being delivered by their homemade platform, as well as by other distribution channels” https://www.nytimes.com/... Justin Hendrix / @justinhendrix : One of the things that is interesting to me in this statement from Rogan is that he states he does little preparation for his podcast conversations, and often has no idea what he is going to talk about with guests. Millions of listeners and influence, and no diligence at all. https://twitter.com/... Kara Swisher / @karaswisher : Interesting that a thing once called editing for facts became being a content censor. Well, not interesting — just wordwashing by tech folks who want all the power and money and none of the responsibilities when things get dicey, as things always get. https://twitter.com/... Walt Mossberg / @waltmossberg : @chrisfralic @JohnLMacFarlane No, because, unlike Spotify, Apple doesn't have exclusive podcasts for which they pay. Niko Salonen / @hyugafe : @JohnLMacFarlane I don't understand, it's not like Apple Podcast doesn't have covid disinformation podcasts? There has been multiple listed around internet and no one has done anything about them, or started boycotting? @counternotions : @bynkii He's getting unhinged in public. @johnlmacfarlane : Cancelled Spotify, end of an era for me. Can't support an org that supports COVID disinformation. Renee DiResta / @noupside : Takedowns, labeling, and “prebunking” are effective in different ways. We should be experimenting w/what works where and when—including better education & counterspeech. Including re-establishing trust in institutions; those experts could take communication tips from influencers. Barbara Malmet / @b52malmet : I'm old enough to remember when the whistleblower brought receipts about Facebook's corruption and all that happened was Zuckerberg changed the company name. I don't believe anything will change at SPOTIFY either, because there are too many people willing to look the other way. @johnlmacfarlane : @hyugafe I would cancel any Apple service as well if they paid for an organization to actively push COVID disinformation that causes this kind of harm in a pandemic. Apple podcasts are simply a directory, like DuckDuckGo. Kara Swisher / @karaswisher : @GregMals Rogan is very much like that and it's fine if they want to tolerate the sloppy stuff. But then they reap the criticism like any media company does. Tim Sweeney / @timsweeneyepic : Is Apple behind this push to boycott Spotify? Or are just fast-following ambulance chasers? https://twitter.com/... @bostonjoan : Yep. Not the same problem of misinformation-at-scale across different platforms. Spotify intentionally took on Rogan, whose entire brand is “controversy!” Neil Young has raised several generations of rockers to use their good fortune to help others. He was underestimated. https://twitter.com/... Chris Fralic / @chrisfralic : @waltmossberg @JohnLMacFarlane Serious question - do you hold Apple to the same level of responsibility for what they allow to be distributed via Podcasts or their App Store? Walt Mossberg / @waltmossberg : I just canceled Spotify Premium, following the lead of @JohnLMacFarlane and others. I'm voting with my dollars because I disagree with their policies and actions regarding podcasts. @bostonjoan : Musicians are fighting on 2 fronts. First, they don't want to be part of the supply chain piping audiences to Spotify, where they may encounter medical misinfo. Second, the pay per play payment system undervalues musicians labor, but had $100million to pay Rogan. Carl / @historyboomer : This reads like an opinion piece trying to make Rogan look like he's losing his fight and deservedly so. Roose also claims that Rogan's video was “apologizing” for his show, but nowhere does Rogan actually do that. 1/ https://www.nytimes.com/... @gregmals : @karaswisher Serious question @karaswisher , how is a podcast any different than talk radio? Renee DiResta / @noupside : There is not any one thing that will “fix misinformation”; a new information ecosystem has transformed who has influence and how that power is used, and we are adapting. It's a complex challenge and we have to think beyond content moderation or fact-checks for solutions. @counternotions : Epic CEO Tim Freeloader Sweeney on billion+ Apple users: “So many tweets today are making the case for an all-powerful tyrant to protect each of us from ourselves and tax us all to pay for it. These bozos deserve to live in the world for they advocate for. The rest of us don't.” See also Mediagazer

Context & Ripple Effects

Rogan’s response arrived as Spotify said it would add measures to address COVID-19 misinformation and as listeners including Walt Mossberg and John L. MacFarlane publicly described canceling subscriptions. The dispute therefore put Spotify’s responsibility for a high-profile exclusive program alongside its role as a distribution platform.

The episode did not end with the video: Spotify later removed older JRE episodes at Rogan’s request, and the archive removal broadened after Rogan’s apology over past use of a racial slur. Together, those actions show the controversy shifting from individual interviews to stewardship of an exclusive catalog.

First-order effects

  • Spotify must implement its promised misinformation measures while managing subscriber backlash tied to Rogan’s program.
  • Rogan’s stated interest in booking more experts gives Spotify a clearer editorial expectation for future episodes, even as he defends the show’s guest choices.

Second-order effects

  • Spotify’s removal of older episodes created a precedent in which an exclusive creator can reshape the availability of their back catalog during a reputational crisis.
  • Public cancellations turn programming governance into a customer-retention issue for Spotify, raising the cost of separating exclusive-content decisions from platform policy.

Third-order effects

  • If this pattern holds, platforms pursuing exclusive creator deals will face more direct accountability for both new programming and historical archives, not merely for general moderation rules.
  • The dispute points toward exclusive-content economics being constrained by governance: a marquee program’s audience value can be offset by the policy and reputation costs imposed on its distributor.

The trend: Audio platforms are learning that exclusive creator programming concentrates both audience value and the governance risk of controversial content.

I would bet everything that Joe Rogan is wayyyyy more knowledgeable on COVID than any of these old hags. That's what is so annoying about today's era. It's the sheep who think they know everything but all they do is blindly follow orders. https://twitter.com/...

All of this. Spotify is not merely hosting misinformation, but FUNDING it. That is why, as I've explained to many angry brogans, this boils down to the ethics of the company and what consumers want to put their money behind. Consumers do this ALL THE TIME. It's not censorship. ht…

Right. Spotify has a contract where they pay Rogan to produce content, including lethal medical misinformation, exclusively for them. That's publishing, not mere provision of an open platform. https://twitter.com/...
