Particularly good post today by Ben Thompson on DALL-E (the new GPT-3 based text to picture ML model) and it's impact on games and so much more. Cuts to the heart of A being included in STEM Will be interesting how many SF book covers arise from this. https://stratechery.com/...

@hyugafe I would cancel any Apple service as well if they paid for an organization to actively push COVID disinformation that causes this kind of harm in a pandemic. Apple podcasts are simply a directory, like DuckDuckGo.

Cancelled Spotify, end of an era for me. Can't support an org that supports COVID disinformation.

We make it almost trivial to have semi automatic weapons designed to kill & maim in mass and then get all worked up about idiots who trick their Autopilot into doing something stupid? Where is the context of this outrage? @ConsumerReports - your drunk, sleep on it. https://twitter.com/...

@ballmatthew @bdmon3 There is a little bit of history here that Apple knows about and is benchmarking to. When Rhapsody, the first of the on-demand streaming services integrated with Sonos (I want to say 2005/2006) the basic cost to Rhapsody was $0.01/track. How do I know? Because Sonos went big.

Looking at payment per stream metrics for music streaming services can be misleading when considering artist pay, as many factors determine streaming royalties

Early Friday, Apple Music sent a carefully worded letter to artists, music labels and publishers that briefly explained …

@ballmatthew @bdmon3 And please don't get into me with the bulls**t that the free tier has ad's and is good. Simply look at it from the Artists perspective and the per stream rates are a hundredth the paid tier. That's what Apple is pointing out. Artists are paying for Spotify's marketing.

Looking at payment per stream metrics for music streaming services can be misleading when considering artist pay, as many factors determine streaming royalties

Early Friday, Apple Music sent a carefully worded letter to artists, music labels and publishers that briefly explained …

@ballmatthew @bdmon3 You do realize that paying less on a unit basis, as the service grows, isn't good for the Artists? Or the market. Even if they grow the market faster than the rate drop that's short term good and long term bad.

Early Friday, Apple Music sent a carefully worded letter to artists, music labels and publishers that briefly explained …

@ballmatthew @bdmon3 So, fast forward, and Apple is saying to the Artists - “we are aligned with you and here is proof” (I don't know if they supplied proof but they are saying the magic penny/pence per stream). And it's largely true. No free tier, simple.

Looking at payment per stream metrics for music streaming services can be misleading when considering artist pay, as many factors determine streaming royalties

Early Friday, Apple Music sent a carefully worded letter to artists, music labels and publishers that briefly explained …

@ballmatthew @bdmon3 They asked Spotify, for example, when Spotify wanted to launch in the US for an enormous up-front payment (like $50M) and a percentage of revenue. I guess they could argue the up-front wasn't for an Artist so they could keep more?

Early Friday, Apple Music sent a carefully worded letter to artists, music labels and publishers that briefly explained …

@ballmatthew @bdmon3 Spotify had no choice, and being the stubborn true believers they were - they paid but they also learned. Next time, Spotify could argue for a lower rate on the streams, and a larger up front (which is always good if you believe in the long term).

@ballmatthew @bdmon3 Apple isn't speaking to you or I. They are talking to the Artists (and Managers). And what they are saying is we (Apple) are doing the right thing by you, see. Now, I can't read the letter, or rally see the figures so I can't say if that's true or not but if I were an Artist...

@ballmatthew @bdmon3 The only service which was Ad based and really worked to make it work for the Artists was Pandora (pre purchase - I don't know now). They worked hard to make the free/ad market work for everyone, inclusive of Artist.
