How Ohio attracted Intel to build semiconductor plants, including pursuing execs for eight months, financial incentives, sustainability commitments, and more

It was a Christmas morning surprise for Ohio's governor and lieutenant governor: Intel was coming to Ohio.

I spoke with @intel CEO @PGelsinger this morning about the $INTC $20B chip fab commitment in Ohio. Site is within a 3-hour drive of 5 other states. Follow-on economic impact of such a site is huge for the Midwest. @SquawkCNBC https://twitter.com/...

I am happy to confirm that my administration has been working closely with @Intel to bring its most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facilities in the world to Ohio. This new #IntelOhio partnership will transform our state! #BuiltForThis https://intelinohio.com/ @LtGovHusted …

To make this much clearer, the promises Intel is making in Ohio — jobs! supplier jobs! university investment! — are the same as Foxconn in Wisconsin. The difference is that the plan to build semiconductors is real and makes sense, and the plan to build LCDs was always fake.

This morning, the folks from Intel joined me to talk about the new $20 billion semiconductor manufacturing facility in Ohio. This is going to mean good paying jobs for thousands of Americans, and tackling the semiconductor chip shortage that is driving up the cost of cars. https:…

Also to be more on topic with XR: Did you know that many of the OLED MICRODISPLAY patents from Meta also credit engineers at Intel? It's VERY likely Intel wants to be a mass producer of backplanes/wafers for the incoming uOLED race

3,000 Intel jobs. 7,000 construction jobs. Tens of thousands of jobs across suppliers and partners. $100 million toward educational partnerships to build a pipeline of talent and bolster research. Check out #IntelOhio: https://www.intel.com/... https://twitter.com/...

For three decades, America has lost semiconductor manufacturing to countries like China - but we're changing that. We're investing in American workers and building the future here in America. https://twitter.com/...

Intel is investing $20 billion in manufacturing in the USA. Meanwhile, Apple is investing $275 billion in China, while conducting a massive US lobbying effort to preserve its monopoly's ability to crush American companies, and negotiating massive subsidies from states. https://tw…

Now we're talking! This is what happens when we *incentivize* U.S. manufacturing. Companies that can get cheaper labor in places like China instead are investing in U.S. workers. It's a combo of state incentives & legislation that changes the game & creates jobs for a generation.…

  • @ryansmithat Ryan Smith on x
@ikesterhaney Yes. Intel is basically dangling that on a line in from of Congress as an incentive for the CHIPS Act. Pass that and award money to Intel, and they can build a production line that's 100% end-to-end in the US

  • @ryansmithat Ryan Smith on x
In some respects, the fact that Intel is building two new fabs isn't the biggest part of this story. Rather, it's that they're building a whole new complex in the US, far from OR/AZ, in order to house them. If fully built, 8 fabs would be a huge amount of domestic capacity https:…

“Wall Street analysts are skeptical of Gelsinger's strategy. They say that Intel's previous attempts to be a foundry have failed, and that it's fallen too far behind to catch up.” A lot of Wall Street is going to look really, really silly in under 24 months. Good read though. htt…

Most of these jobs will go to foreign workers (predominantly Indian nationals) brought in via the H-1B visa program. Intel is a notorious exploiter of H-1B visas. Not sure how this is a “win” for Columbus, OH when none of your local people will be hired for these jobs. https://tw…
