Google updates its “About This Result” panel with more context about the specific search result, including matching keywords, related terms, and local relevance

Google now list several of the factors it used to rank a result in the about this result section.

Search Engine Land Barry Schwartz

Context & Ripple Effects

Google introduced the About This Result menu earlier in 2021 to give searchers information about sites before visiting them. The update extends that feature from site-level context to explanations tied to an individual result.

It also fits Google’s longer pattern of adding query-specific context in Search, including expanded featured snippets for related searches. The important change is that matching terms and local relevance become visible alongside the result rather than remaining implicit in ranking.

First-order effects

  • Searchers can see which keywords, related terms, and local signals Google associates with a particular result, giving them more context for judging its relevance.
  • Google makes parts of its result-selection rationale visible within Search while publishers’ listings are evaluated against those displayed signals.

Second-order effects

  • Publishers and SEO teams gain a clearer on-page indication of the query and locality cues attached to their results, sharpening attention on whether search snippets align with the intended audience.
  • The panel complements later result-page changes such as showing quoted phrases in snippets, making the connection between a query and a displayed page more explicit.

Third-order effects

  • If Google continues exposing result-level context across Search formats, search interfaces shift toward explaining relevance alongside ranking it, even while Google retains control over which signals are shown.
  • That shift raises the value of clear query-to-page alignment for publishers because users can increasingly inspect why a result was surfaced before deciding to click.

The trend: Google Search is moving from presenting ranked links alone toward embedding more visible context about why individual results match a query.
