The arrival of AI search bodes ill for everyone who relies on web search to have their business discovered, their blog post read, or their journalism funded

With AI search results coming to the masses, the human-powered web recedes further into the background

We've launched a new “Web” filter that shows only text-based links, just like you might filter to show other types of results, such as images or videos. The filter appears on the top of the results page alongside other filters or as part of the “More” option, rolling out today... [image]

With AI search results coming to the masses, the human-powered web recedes further into the background

We've added this after hearing from some that there are times when they'd prefer to just see links to web pages in their search results, such as if they're looking for longer-form text documents, using a device with limited internet access, or those who just prefer text-based...

... Yes, it's been removed.  I know, it's sad.  I'm sad too.  It's one of our oldest features.  But it was meant for helping people access pages when way back, you often couldn't depend on a page loading.  These days, things have greatly improved.  So, it was decided to retire it.

@jason_koebler As for the use of AI to generate content, as we've explained before, our focus is on the quality of content, not the production. This shouldn't be misinterpreted as if we've granted a free pass to churning out lots of low quality content. It is not and doing so is against our...

Google says 404 Media's report claiming Google is “boosting” AI-written article is misleading since the writer sorted news content by date rather than relevance

Barry Schwartz / Search Engine Roundtable :

@jason_koebler Jason, I'd like to clarify Google News is not somehow “boosting” AI content to the top of search results. This is not the case. I also appreciate the frustration of a new publication like yours wanting to quickly appear in Google News. I do. It's something I hope we'll improve...

Google says 404 Media's report claiming Google is “boosting” AI-written article is misleading since the writer sorted news content by date rather than relevance

Barry Schwartz / Search Engine Roundtable :

@jason_koebler In particular, it's possible to use the News tab on Google Search to show news-related content sorted by date, as opposed to by relevance. That's what was done with the screenshots. Doing this is expressingly asking our systems to ignore the regular relevance ranking that they...
