Mark Zuckerberg says the original Oculus Quest will receive Air Link support in a post about the upcoming v30 update for Quest

He also showed off multitasking in VR  —  Owners of the original Oculus Quest will get the ability to stream from their PCs to their headsets wirelessly …

The Verge Mitchell Clark

Context & Ripple Effects

Quest’s PC-VR path began with planned direct PC connectivity and then the USB-C-based Oculus Link beta, before Oculus introduced wireless Air Link for Quest 2 in v28. Extending that capability to the original headset makes the wireless-PC feature a Quest-family software benefit rather than a Quest 2-only differentiator.

The v30 announcement also pairs that compatibility expansion with multitasking in VR, following a recent Quest update that added mixed-reality capture through iPhone casting. Oculus is adding utility and sharing features around the headset while broadening access to PC-powered VR.

First-order effects

  • Original Oculus Quest owners gain wireless access to PC VR content through Air Link, removing the USB-C cable requirement established by Oculus Link.
  • Quest users also receive multitasking in VR through v30, expanding what they can do within the headset interface.

Second-order effects

  • Quest 2 loses some feature exclusivity as Air Link reaches the original Quest, shifting its differentiation away from wireless PC streaming.
  • PC VR users can choose wireless streaming across a larger installed base of Quest headsets, making Oculus’s Link/Air Link route more central to access to Rift PC games.

Third-order effects

  • If Oculus continues to back older headsets with PC connectivity and interface features, the Quest line becomes a longer-lived software platform rather than a sequence of isolated hardware generations.
  • The progression from wired Link to wireless Air Link points to VR hardware competing on how flexibly it connects standalone and PC-based experiences.

The trend: Oculus is converging standalone and PC VR through software updates that make wireless access and broader headset compatibility core platform features.

Don't call it Oculus. Call it Facebookculus. It was bought out a couple years back. You need a Facebook account to use one. Now Zuckerberg can REALLY get in your face. And harvest your eye movements. https://twitter.com/...
