Oculus' latest update for its Quest headsets adds a Live Overlay casting feature that allows mixed reality capture with just an iPhone model XS or newer
v29 is packed with features — Oculus will soon roll out its v29 software for Quest andQuest 2 headsets, and this one adds more features and functionality to the lineup.

Context & Ripple Effects
Oculus has been turning its quarterly software updates into the main product-improvement channel for the Quest line: the v28 release brought wireless Air Link PC VR streaming and a 120Hz refresh rate to Quest 2, following the earlier drop that added 90Hz game support and the Oculus Move fitness tracker. v29's Live Overlay continues that pattern by making the headset itself a capture device.
The notable design choice is the dependency on Apple hardware: mixed reality capture works only with an iPhone XS or newer, a requirement Oculus keeps when it ships a dedicated mixed reality camera in the later v35 update. It echoes the platform's older broadcasting push, like Gear VR Facebook Livestreaming back in 2017, but now aimed at creators producing mixed reality clips for social feeds.
First-order effects
Quest andQuest 2 owners holding an iPhone XS or newer can record mixed reality footage of themselves playing without an external camera, green screen, or PC capture setup — previously a multi-piece production job.
Content creators gain a zero-cost path to shareable VR clips, directly serving Oculus' long-running push to get headset gameplay onto Facebook-owned social channels.
Second-order effects
By keeping the iPhone XS-or-newer floor through the subsequent v35 camera feature, Oculus ties part of its headset experience to Apple's installed base, effectively subsidizing its capture tooling with phones buyers already own instead of shipping proprietary cameras.
Third-order effects
If the update cadence holds — Air Link in v28, Live Overlay in v29, a full mixed reality camera by v35 — the Quest line consolidates around free over-the-air feature drops as the competitive weapon, shifting rivalry from hardware specs to how fast each vendor's software turns the headset into a content-production platform.
The trend: VR headsets are being repositioned as creator platforms through rapid software updates that lean on smartphones users already carry, with capture features becoming table stakes.
V29 adds features to boost productivity in VR and a richer way to share in-headset experiences with people. We'll also begin testing sponsored apps for Oculus in the mobile app to help people discover the amazing content devs are building on the platform https://www.oculus.com/..…
@boztank Thanks so much for the new update. I'm so excited for this. You guys are doing a great job and also congrats to the team that helped make this happen. 🥰
(Right after v28 with these features https://www.youtube.com/... !) With the earlier announced Spectator casting mode combined with this Live overlay, it sounds like a live mixed reality mode with live camera control should be possible in the future. FANTASTIC for content creator…
The new Oculus Quest update will finally capture the microphone when casting or recording. This should be relief for video creators assuming the mic doesn't sound like shit https://www.oculus.com/... https://twitter.com/...

@boztank any improvement on reliability of Messenger integration? Mine crash almost 90% of the time. I stop getting new messages and mine won't send. I need to reboot headset to get it to sync again. Its a feature I really love so far! but a bit unreliable for me.
The latest Oculus Quest software enables iOS users to see their iPhone lock screen notifications while in VR. The update also adds a file management app. https://uploadvr.com/... https://twitter.com/...
