Oculus rolls out v35, adding a mixed reality camera feature that requires an iPhone XS or above, Messenger Calling in VR, a new cloud backup system, and more

An upcoming update to the Oculus Quest and Meta Quest 2 will add mixed reality capture via iPhone and calling via Messenger, Mark Zuckerberg confirmed.

Context & Ripple Effects

Quest software has been accumulating the pieces for a broader social and mixed-reality stack: Messenger arrived on Quest alongside App Lab, while Presence Platform SDKs gave developers tools for mixed-reality experiences.

V35 extends that arc at the headset level. Its iPhone-based capture requirement turns mixed-reality sharing into a feature with a defined companion-device threshold, while calling and cloud backup make the Quest environment more useful between app sessions.

First-order effects

  • Quest and Meta Quest 2 owners with an iPhone XS or newer gain the new mixed-reality capture path; owners without a qualifying iPhone do not.
  • Messenger users on Quest gain calling in VR, and the new cloud backup system changes how their headset data is retained across use of the devices.

Second-order effects

  • The iPhone requirement makes Apple hardware a complementary input for Quest mixed-reality capture, limiting Meta's capture workflow to a subset of its headset audience.
  • Developers using the Presence Platform gain a larger installed base of users able to capture and share mixed-reality experiences, alongside Quest's existing iPhone-based Live Overlay casting support.

Third-order effects

  • If Meta continues to layer communications, backup, and capture into headset updates, Quest competition shifts further from standalone hardware features toward the surrounding service and creator workflow.
  • Mixed-reality distribution may remain shaped by companion-device compatibility, with the phone a gatekeeper for who can produce polished headset footage.

The trend: VR headsets are becoming service-connected mixed-reality platforms whose social and creator features depend increasingly on companion-device workflows.

Quest players, App Sharing is now available for Beat Saber and allows you to share the game between accounts logged in on your headset. The feature is available for songs in Original Soundtracks, Extras, and Camellia Pack. Read the Blog Post: https://www.oculus.com/... https://tw…
