This is really positive for both Unity and $MSFT $U Microsoft Mesh is a SDK that supports Unity, C++ and C#. Microsoft and Unity are longtime partners, Unity being responsible for the vast majority of Hololens 2 apps. https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/ ... https://twitter.com/.…

We're thrilled to collaborate with @microsoft & @hololens on new experiences that will weave together the digital and physical world. Check out this proof-of-concept demo, built on our planet-scale platform, and the amazing possibilities that could await. https://nianticlabs.com/…

Alex Kipman is now demoing Microsoft Mesh IRL. James Cameron and others should also be there too. IRC, he's not behind a blue screen, but 3D-scanned into that environment, which is shared on AltSpaceVR. https://twitter.com/...

Introducing Microsoft Mesh, which enables people to interact holographically with others, with true presence and in a natural way. I can't wait to see the world we create together with this new platform. https://news.microsoft.com/...

Microsoft Mesh will work with Hololens 2, Windows VR headsets Oculus headsets, PCs, Macs, and Smartphones. #MSIgnite #MicrosoftMesh https://twitter.com/...

.@Microsoft Mesh seems really promising. Global shared MR platform that, like much of Microsoft's #AR/#VR software/services, supports lots of end devices, not just @HoloLens. If Oculus or Apple win on the client, Microsoft can still own the middle/cloud.

have we really run out of ideas on what to name things? mesh is already the name of a completely different, but widely used technology. why are you doing this to us microsoft https://twitter.com/...

@saschasegan I have a LOT to say about this but it doesn't fit in a tweet. Both Microsoft and Apple are well positioned for an XR-abundant future. Microsoft has high ROI use cases today, but is not discounting Apple being a force tomorrow and planning accordingly.
  • @saschasegan Sascha Segan on x
Hearing some buzz about Microsoft Mesh for XR today but I want to hear more about who's getting past the cost, display and battery problems which have kept XR extremely niche. Is it going to end up being Apple in 2024?
  • @greengart Avi Greengart on x
Microsoft has so much opportunity today with #mesh, @MSFTDynamics365, and @hololens in the enterprise — and it can create a defensible position there vs. Apple, Oculus, and anyone else. The consumer tech is really early, and Microsoft is smart to prioritize. https://twitter.com/.…
  • @greengart Avi Greengart on x
@saschasegan Short version: Apple will definitely try to own the entire stack, but won't cover every use case/user. Microsoft is aiming for Dynamics and Mesh to be like Office for the Mac (and PC. And Android. And web).

Apple successfully co opted music players, video players, phones and tablets from Microsoft who had ambitions for all of those categories. Almost forgot SPOT smart watches. So add that category in too please. Oh, and Music services. Almost forgot about Groove & Urge & MSN
  • @gartenberg Michael Gartenberg on x
I'm a little skeptical without more information about the hardware. HoloLens is hardly consumer friendly from either form or price. I won't call it Microsoft “Meh” just yet while I keep an eye on how it develops. Also, is this another case where Apple swoops in and co lots? https…

Microsoft Mesh is a new cloud service that will help developers add collaborative features like video calls into apps that work on the HoloLens & other kinds of devices. i met with 3 people in an app that uses Mesh while using HoloLens and it was very cool https://www.cnbc.com/..…
  • @daniel_rubino Daniel Rubino on x
In other words, you can join him in that room and experience that VR/MR as if you were really there. And yes, it's going to Microsoft Teams, which is going to make work meetings very weird/cool in a few years.
  • @scobleizer Scoble on x
@PatrickMoorhead I would expect Microsoft to port Mesh to any platform that gets popular. Just like Office ships on iOS.
  • @patrickmoorhead @patrickmoorhead on x
@Scobleizer I'm just trying to figure out how Mesh is different from what they did before which encompassed iOS, Android and Windows.
  • @patrickmoorhead @patrickmoorhead on x
I liked the Niantic Hololens demo, but I wouldn't confuse that with Microsoft going all-in on consumer MR. I see Microsoft remaining focus on business MR, maybe education. #MSIgnite
  • @patrickmoorhead @patrickmoorhead on x
Some good MR and Hololens factoids: -90% companies >500 employees using or prototyping MR -50% F500 purchased Hololens -Lockheed Martin reduced touch labor by 90% -Toyota reduced time spent doing inspections 20% Nice to see real biz benefits. #MSIgnite https://twitter.com/...
