Apple announces Barbara Whye as its new head of inclusion and diversity starting in early 2021; Whye will arrive from a similar role at Intel

Apple has announced a new vice president of inclusion and diversity.  Barbara Whye, who has made a name for herself as Intel's head of D&I, will join the iPhone-maker in early 2021.

Fortune Michal Lev-Ram

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple's diversity post has been a revolving door: Denise Young Smith handed the role to Christie Smith in 2017, and Smith left just three years later per Bloomberg's June report of her departure. Barbara Whye, arriving from Intel in early 2021, becomes the third person to hold the job in roughly five years.

The hire lands months after Apple began converting post-BLM commitments into programs, including the Detroit Developer Academy, so Whye inherits a role that now carries visible deliverables rather than reporting alone.

First-order effects

  • Whye fills a VP seat that has sat open since Christie Smith's exit, while Intel simultaneously loses the executive who built its public D&I profile.

Second-order effects

  • Big Tech's D&I bench keeps circulating rather than growing: Twitter poached Apple's Jeffrey Siminoff for the same title back in 2015, and Whye's move confirms these roles are staffed by cross-company raids, raising the price of retaining any proven D&I leader.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds — three chiefs in five years at the most valuable company in the cohort — D&I leadership risks hardening into a short-tenure, portfolio-building role, pushing boards to ask whether the position carries real operational authority or functions as reputational cover.

The trend: Big Tech is filling diversity chief posts through cross-company poaching with multi-year rather than career-length tenures, turning D&I leadership into a circulating executive commodity.
