Apple unveils iPhone 12 with 6.1" OLED display and 460ppi, A14, thinner and lighter design, 5G, improved durability, and five color options, starting at $829

The right iPhone for most people gets a new design, OLED screen, and 5G  —  It might be happening a bit later than usual, but Apple has just announced the iPhone 12.

A cutout does not “work as an antenna.” And this: “5G works based on low range frequencies, the antenna structure was redesigned to work as expected, and this resulted in a new cutout on the side edge of the iPhone 12.” Isn't even wrong. https://9to5mac.com/...

it's absolutely ridiculous how good the iphone 12 looks https://twitter.com/...

Oh boy, the iPhone screen resolutions are giving me a headache already. Seems like the 6.1" models both have a new screen layout that is *smaller* than last year's 6.1" model iPhone 11 & XR: 414 x 896 pt iPhone 12 & 12 Pro: 390 x 844 pt

Night Mode coming to every iPhone on both front and back cameras. Nice!

The new design is so clean. This is the best looking iPhone in years https://twitter.com/...

The SIM-Free, T-Mobile and Sprint iPhone 12 and 12 mini are $30 more than the Verizon and AT&T versions. $729 versus $699 starting prices. https://www.bloomberg.com/... https://twitter.com/...

If you're looking for a huge feature to justify the higher prices than 12 and 12 mini: There is none. It's a bunch of smaller, impressive improvements focused on the cameras and media experience. All that said, the coolest new feature of any of these phones is MagSafe.

Apple claiming the A14 is generations ahead of competing chips is telling about their silicon strategy.

In ~10 years, Apple went from having one person (Steve) handle an entire product unveiling to having 10+ people talk about new features and products in their domain.

Apple's new iPhone 12 models are coming with a new 5-nanometer A14 Bionic chip with more than 11.8 billion transistors. The new chip has six CPU cores, including two high-performance cores. Apple says the chip is 50% faster than any other smartphone chip. https://twitter.com/...

Ok so MagSafe for iPhone: Helps you line up wireless chargers better (why has no one done this before) MagSafe accessories like cases and a charger can snap onto the back of the iPhone MagSafe Duo charger: Sorry AirPower I love this. https://twitter.com/...

New dual 12MP cameras Wider f/1.6 aperture Should make for better low light and portrait performance. But most of the camera improvements we're seeing these days come with software like SmartHDR3. And night mode coming to the front facing camera 👍🏾 https://twitter.com/...

Each new iPhone CPU has 11.8bn transistors. That's about half as many as all the CPUs in all the Macs Apple sold when it launched in 1984

Apple has worked with over 100 carriers to deliver 5G on iPhone 12. Here are some of them. #AppleEvent https://twitter.com/...
  • @stshank Stephen Shankland on x
Smart: the iPhone 12 will use 4G LTE until 5G speeds are needed, I imagine to improve battery life. 5G delivers 3.5Gbps under “ideal conditions,” Apple says. 4Gbps with millimeter-wave best conditions, 1Gbps under typical conditions. #AppleEvent

What do you call the person at Apple whose job it is to choose how many nits the new iPhone display should have
  • @jacknicas Jack Nicas on x
Apple just said the iPhone 12 screen will be 4x less likely to crack if you drop it, which is terrible news for the iPhone repair kiosks at the mall. #AppleEvent

iPhone 12 gets 5G, flat edges, higher resolution display, and Ceramic Shield on the display. Pretty great for the non-Pro model https://www.theverge.com/... https://twitter.com/...
  • @karlbode Karl Bode on x
Don't believe the 5G hype. U.S. 5G networks are spotty, dramatically slower than overseas networks, and in many cases aren't even faster than 4G. My latest at @ozm: https://debugger.medium.com/ ...
  • @thurrott Paul Thurrott on x
This is the same room they used to test the iPhone 4. So you know the antennas are just fine. AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAA
  • @patrickmcgee_ Patrick McGee on x
Apple says the iPhone 12 has “the most 5G bands of any smartphone”
  • @patrickmcgee_ Patrick McGee on x
Smart data mode: “When your iPhone doesn't need 5G speeds, it automatically uses LTE to save battery.”
  • @macrumorslive @macrumorslive on x
iPhone 12 features a “Ceramic Shield” display that “goes beyond glass” with a nano ceramic crystal matrix to improve toughness. It's “tougher than any smartphone glass” and “makes iPhone more durable than ever.” 4x better drop performance.
