Facebook, today: “Unfortunately, we had to remove gameplay functionality entirely in order to get Apple's approval on the standalone Facebook Gaming app — meaning iOS users have an inferior experience to those using Android.” https://www.theverge.com/...

If it's the same as the Facebook Gaming app on Android .. maybe Apple has some genuine questions about how Facebook is obtaining consent for ad-related trackers https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...

3/ Citing App Store guideline 4.7, Apple rejected the app claiming the primary purpose of the Facebook Gaming app is to play games. It's not. ~95% of app activity on Android is from watching livestreams. We shared this stat with Apple, but no luck.

BREAKING: Facebook slams Apple's App Store policies. Facebook is speaking out against Apple today, and launching its Facebook Gaming app on iOS after months of rejections by Apple. Details here: https://www.theverge.com/... https://twitter.com/...

By this logic Apple also shouldn't allow Twitch (can't review all the streams!) or Netflix (all the movies!) or YouTube (all the songs!) or Twitter or Facebook or like half the stuff on the App Store. This is such bad-faith logic https://twitter.com/...
  • @gruber John Gruber on x
@NSExceptional @kiggle But when it comes to games in particular, it's clearly not horseshit. Apple runs iOS like a console. Xbox is a console. Xbox doesn't allow a service like xCloud from other providers. So why should Apple unless they agree to financial terms?
  • @timsweeneyepic Tim Sweeney on x
Apple has outlawed the metaverse. The principle they state, taken literally, would rule out all cross-platform ecosystems and games with user created modes: not just XCloud, Stadia, and GeForce NOW, but also Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox. https://twitter.com/...

  • @bzamayo Benjamin Mayo on x
I went back to check the dates to be sure. December 21st 2017 is when App Store rules specifically outlawed game services like xCloud etc. Apple Arcade was announced in March 2019, but surely must have been in the works internally right around late 2017. https://twitter.com/...

after reading this, I seriously need to consider getting an Android phone Apple making ridiculous demands for apps is holding back innovation on their platform I want to use Project xCloud and it seems I'll need to nab a Samsung device to do it https://www.windowscentral.com/ ...

    1. Content - These games are reviewed by official ratings boards that have been doing it far longer than Apple has been. 2. Security - These aren't games...they're videos. https://twitter.com/...

this is a truly ridiculous argument by apple. is it going to start reviewing every movie on netflix? https://www.theverge.com/...
  • @mspoonauer Mark Spoonauer on x
This is ridiculous. It's like saying every song on Spotify or every show in Netflix needs to be individually approved. https://www.businessinsider.com/ ... #apple #XboxGamePass #GalaxyNote20
  • @willsmith @willsmith on x
I'm not really a fan of cloud gaming services, but Apple is messing up by denying them access to the store. Does Apple validate every piece of content on Netflix or HBO Max? It's the exact same thing: https://www.theverge.com/...
  • @parkerortolani Parker Ortolani on x
They're right. Apple doesn't screen every Netflix show, every product on Amazon, every song in Spotify, every publication in Flipboard, every account on Twitter, every site in Chrome... shall I continue? https://twitter.com/...
  • @gruber John Gruber on x
@navalang @TechmemeChatter @NSExceptional @kiggle Apple clearly thinks of it as a console, billion users or not. And EA is on Xbox it means they've agreed to terms. I don't see Steam for Xbox.

By that same logic Netflix should be banned from the AppStore do. Apple what are you doing? Are you trying to get people to hate you? https://twitter.com/...

Apple is actively holding back cloud gaming. I don't see any argument that makes them look good in this. https://www.theverge.com/...
  • @tomwarren Tom Warren on x
“Apple runs iOS like a console” is a ridiculous defense of a $2 trillion corporation. An iPhone or iPad is not a dedicated game console (100m units), it's a general purpose device (1.5 billion units) that's open to all apps. The equivalent is more of a PC, not a game console 🙄 ht…

Apple refusing to approve xCloud because they can't review all the games on it is 🙄 of the highest order. Do they review every video on Netflix or every book on Amazon? Just a reminder that much as it tries to insist otherwise, Apple has never really “gotten” gaming.

This was the *same* reason Apple gave me for why Delta wasn't allowed. I appealed @ WWDC, they said they'd allow a version with an allowlist of Apple-approved games. Happy to do literally anything to get Delta in the App Store, I then devoted all my free time to finishing it... h…

Good for you Microsoft! This was the final straw for Apple. After my contract runs out this year I'll be switching to the Pixel 5. I've had enough of how Apple treats their developers and it's customers. https://twitter.com/...
  • @carnage4life Dare Obasanjo on x
Bill Gates once said a platform is when the economic value of everybody that uses it exceeds the value of the company that creates it. Apple has now forgotten that as it seeks its 30% cut by any means necessary. iPhone users are now the losers. https://www.theverge.com/...
  • @tomwarren Tom Warren on x
Microsoft is now commenting further on xCloud iOS ban. “Apple stands alone as the only general purpose platform to deny consumers from cloud gaming and game subscription services like Xbox Game Pass.” https://www.theverge.com/... https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...
  • @artemr Artem Russakovskii on x
What an idiotic justification for not allowing cloud gaming by @Apple. I hope they lose market share for this as people start buying devices that let them use cloud services they pay for. https://twitter.com/...
  • @dhh @dhh on x
Soon, all economic activity that happens without paying Apple will be a violation of their “guidelines”. (Which, btw, is a completely bullshit word for their enforcement scheme.) https://twitter.com/...

I get why Apple would have this rationale, but nixing cloud-gaming services from two of its biggest competitors over it, a week after being brought before the House over App Store antitrust concerns, is... a look https://www.theverge.com/...

At some point.... something has to break here? Why doesn't Apple require every movie on Netflix get reviewed? https://twitter.com/...

Makes sense. I assume Apple watches every show on Netflix to make sure they all past muster as well. https://twitter.com/...
