In leaked audio from an internal meeting, Mark Zuckerberg says they will re-examine policies around politicians discussing the use of state force on Facebook

The company is treating a moral issue as if it's a legal one  —  I. The CEO  —  On Friday afternoon, Facebook …

The Verge Casey Newton

Context & Ripple Effects

This is the third leak in a year from inside Facebook's own walls. In leaked audio from July open meetings, Zuckerberg had already framed the company's political tightrope and breakup risk for employees; this June recording lands two days into the George Floyd protest wave, with Trump's posts about state force as the live test case.

Two days later Zuckerberg faced the same audience again in a transcript of his Tuesday all-hands on speech and racial justice, and by September leaked recordings showed the balancing act hardening — employees demanding a harder line on Trump while other users pushed the opposite way. The pattern across all three: internal dissent forcing policy language out of the CEO before it's formally announced.

First-order effects

  • Facebook's existing carve-out letting politicians' speech stand is now under formal review specifically where it touches state force — the rule that currently shields posts like Trump's from moderation action.

Second-order effects

  • Employees who escalated over Trump's posts gain a concrete lever: the review gives internal critics a documented commitment they can hold leadership to, raising the cost of another 'moral issue treated as a legal one' defense.
  • Every platform governing political speech now has to draw the same line Zuckerberg is redrawing — whether incitement-adjacent content from elected officials stays exempt when it references force.

Third-order effects

  • If the review ends the blanket politician exemption, platform governance shifts from neutrality-by-default toward content-based rules for the powerful — a structural change regulators and rivals would both have to respond to.

The trend: Platform governance of political speech is moving from universal exemptions for politicians toward case-by-case rules forged under employee and public pressure, with leaks doing the disclosing.

Mark is wrong, and I will endeavor in the loudest possible way to change his mind.

There's a real debate about whether Facebook should fact-check, suppress, or de-platform demagogic politicians. Personally, I think we should be doing at least the first two. But to me, there's a deeper issue: Facebook is breaking society, and we're not doing enough to fix it.
  • @aweary Brandon Dail on x
Disappointed that, again, I need to call this out: Trump's glorification of violence on Facebook is disgusting and it should absolutely be flagged or removed from our platforms. I categorically disagree with any policy that does otherwise.
