Qualcomm unveils 5G-compatible Snapdragon XR2 to power standalone headsets, says it is working with Niantic Labs to develop a reference design for smart glasses

Qualcomm has been building a dedicated XR silicon line since 2018, when its Snapdragon 845 standalone reference headset added eye and body tracking, followed by the XR1, its first purpose-built SoC for VR and AR devices. Earlier in 2019 it also pitched Snapdragon-powered headsets doubling as wireless displays for PCs, positioning the company as the default chip supplier for untethered headsets.

The XR2 extends that playbook with integrated 5G — removing the tether and the phone — while the Niantic Labs partnership marks a shift in form factor: from enclosed headsets toward lightweight smart glasses, an area where Qualcomm has shipped reference designs before rather than finished products.

    The biggest everyday use case advancement, IMO, you'll find in Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 is going to be in the camera. Qualcomm completely rearchitectured its Spectra ISP to be WAY faster and WAY more efficient. Also it can shoot 8K video. https://www.androidpolice.com/ ...
