Qualcomm has spent three years building dedicated XR silicon — starting with the Snapdragon XR1 for VR and AR headsets, then the 5G-capable XR2 paired with a Niantic smart-glasses reference design. Snapdragon Spaces extends that playbook up the stack: instead of just selling chips, Qualcomm is now offering developers hardware-agnostic APIs and Unreal Engine 4 and Unity support that target AR on phones as well as dedicated glasses.

The timing matters because Qualcomm's core handset business is under pressure — the company expects Apple-related revenue to decline faster and recently reported Q3 revenue of $9.95 billion, down 4% year over year, with shares falling more than 7% pre-market around this period. A software platform layered across its XR chips is a bid to own the developer relationship, not just the component slot.
