A year earlier it moved from repurposing phone silicon to a purpose-built part, unveiling the Snapdragon XR1, its first dedicated SoC for VR and AR headsets, after shipping an 845-based standalone reference headset with eye and body tracking. The new wrinkle here is form-factor flexibility: one Snapdragon-powered device that runs standalone and also streams wirelessly from a PC.

That dual-mode pitch matters because Qualcomm is positioning itself as the silicon layer for the whole headset market rather than a component vendor — a strategy it extended months later with the 5G-compatible XR2 and a Niantic smart-glasses reference design.
