Intel's credit-card-sized Compute Card, unveiled at CES 2017 as a laptop-class CPU module that could slot into all-in-one PCs and smart TVs, is dead after barely two years on the market. The confirmation ends a product line that was pitched as the standardizable heart of consumer devices.

The cancellation follows a familiar script: in mid-2017 Intel had already pulled the plug on its earlier compute modules — Edison, Joule, and Galileo — along with its Recon eyewear line. Four years later the same pruning logic reached the NUC small-form-factor PC business, which Intel handed off to ecosystem partners.

First-order effects

  • Device makers who designed all-in-ones or smart TVs around the Compute Card slot lose their planned upgrade path and must re-source silicon or redesign around conventional boards.
