Intel is re-entering the high-end desktop segment it had let stagnate: the new Core X lineup tops out at an 18-core part on the X299 platform, replacing X99 and stretching from $242 entry parts to $2,000 flagships. The timing is not accidental — AMD's Ryzen Threadripper line has been pushing core counts up while undercutting Intel's pricing at the top of the stack.

The coverage since this launch shows how contested the segment became: Intel later refreshed Skylake-X with seven new CPUs including the $1,979 i9-9980XE and pushed to 28 cores in workstations with the Xeon W-3175X, while AMD answered with 24- and 32-core Threadripper parts built on 7nm Zen 2 at $1,399–$1,999.
