Apple refreshes the web version of the App Store, letting users view and search for apps for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro

Now iPhone users can view apps anonymously in a private browser Threads: Andy Cheng / @firerock31 : Can't believe Apple finally launched the web version of the Apple Store in 2025 (yes, Android did this back in 2011).  It's not a new new web store, but the App Store was barebone and not easy for new app discovery.  And, there's no remote install option...disappointing. Mastodon: John Voorhees / @johnvoorhees@mastodon.macstories.net : @refactoredd @viticci That's an interesting theory, but I think LLM companies could probably scrape that data from the iTunes API.  Could be though. @viticci@mastodon.macstories.net : Our @johnvoorhees said it best:  —  Apple Recreated the App Store on the Web with No Way to Download or Buy Apps https://www.macstories.net/...  [image]

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple has been extending selected services beyond native apps, first with Maps on the web and then a browser-based Podcasts experience. The App Store update applies that same browser-access model to software discovery across Apple’s device families.

It also arrives after Apple committed to alternative app stores in the EU, making the boundaries between catalog discovery, distribution, and platform control more consequential.

First-order effects

  • People can browse and search Apple software catalogs from a web browser across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro.
  • Developers gain another Apple-controlled surface on which their app listings can be discovered, without a reported change to App Store distribution rules.

Second-order effects

  • Cross-device web discovery can make an app’s listing, compatibility information, and search placement more important for reaching users before they are on a specific device.
  • Alternative-store operators in the EU now compete against a more accessible official catalog for attention, even though Apple’s web refresh does not itself change the terms for alternative distribution.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple continues moving service catalogs to the browser, the web becomes a broader entry point into its ecosystem while transactions and distribution can remain governed by platform-specific store rules.
  • The pattern could sharpen regulatory focus on whether opening discovery surfaces meaningfully expands choice when the platform still defines the route from discovery to installation.

The trend: Apple is progressively using web interfaces to widen access to ecosystem services while retaining the App Store as the central governed distribution layer.
