Apple announces the iPhone Air, with eSIM-only worldwide, a 5.6mm design, an A19 Pro chip, an N1 chip for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a Center Stage front camera
a great choice. Gonna be hard to pick one over the other. [image] @ijustine : New iPhone 17 Air is soooo thin, wow. Feels like the first MacBook Air announcement.. #AppleEvent ... Max Weinbach / @maxwinebach : The iPhone setup feels way better now iPhone 17 for most people iPhone Air for pro-sumer iPhone 17 Pro for actual professionals Turner Novak / @turnernovak : locking in for three hours to watch Apple launch the same phone for the sixth time M.G. Siegler / @mgsiegler : So, if I saw that right, iPhone 17 Pro = 39 hours. iPhone Air + MagSafe = 40 hours. Interesting. #AppleEvent Max Weinbach / @maxwinebach : iPhone Air now has 2 new pieces of Apple Silicon N1 wireless chip for WiFi/Bluetooth and C1x C1x is faster and more efficient than the modem in iPhone 16 Pro Christina Warren / @film_girl : I just can't understand the iPhone Air. If it was smaller physically, fine. But it's a really thin phone that is still too big for most of my pockets, just thin and with a battery that will absolutely not last all day for power users. So like, why does this exist?! Zoe Kleinman / @zsk : iPhone 17 Air is a clever move by Apple. Your phone, but skinnier. Design is everything! @zephyr_z9 : This will sell a lot [image] Quinn Nelson / @snazzylabs : “All day battery life” on the iPhone Air is gonna suck because “all day battery life” means nothing. They've been saying that since the iPhone 4 lol Steve Moser / @stevemoser : iPhone Air weirdly get 2 bento slides. Also I wonder how long it will be until the C-series modem chips and N-series connectivity chips will be embedded in the A-series chips and stopped being called out by Apple. Apple only mentioned 4 generations of the M-series chips before [image] M.G. Siegler / @mgsiegler : Did I miss it, I think they're going with: • iPhone 17 • iPhone Air • iPhone 17 Pro i.e. no ‘17’ in Air model? Maybe just for nice clean marketing for the first iteration? #AppleEvent Alex Volkov / @altryne : iPhone AIR: “Thinnest iPhone Ever” with the power of Pro 💨 A19 Pro, 5.6mm, 6.5" 3K nits for brightness, Fusion Camera, Ceramic Shield 2, with most of the components in the “Plateau” and All Day 🔋 yet most people will hide it in a case which will cancel out the thinness 😅 [image] Ben Bajarin / @benbajarin : Apple's position for iPhone Air - designed for people who want pro performance in an incredibly thin design. Makes sense for the person who wnats premium design/performance but doesn't necessarily need the camera of the Pro. Joanna Stern / @joannastern : iPhone Air bumper. Bumpers are back, baby. [image] Joshua Topolsky / @joshuatopolsky : what I'm hearing is I do not need 3 lenses Tom Krikorian / @tom_krikorian : If Apple can make an iPhone Air, they can make a Vision Air 👀 @nirave : Can't wait to test the battery life! #AppleEvent #iPhoneAir #iPhone17Air [image] Ben Bajarin / @benbajarin : Also, as I pointed out before, iPhone Air is the future half of an iPhone foldable. The durabitly story becomes even more critical in this context. Gene Munster / @munster_gene : Like it or not, the iPhone Air front and rear camera that record at the same time will quickly become be a TikTok standard. Ed Ludlow / @edludlow : iPhone Air includes a new 18-megapixel front-facing Center Stage camera. M.G. Siegler / @mgsiegler : iPhone Air clearly better angled as more ‘Pro’ than ‘Plus’, which is a mild surprise, but makes sense for trying to sell this thing. #AppleEvent @saradietschy : My fave promo vid so far iPhone Air #AppleEvent [image] M.G. Siegler / @mgsiegler : “The new plateau” — John Ternus gives an official name to the iPhone Air back bump? #AppleEvent @om : @WHOOP 7/ 7/ Damn the engineering required to fit all that silicon into that tiny space. Okay, at least Apple is doing that part of the business better than ever. iPhone 17 Air has some mad engineering for sure, if not all the stuff I want. #AppleEvent Ben Bajarin / @benbajarin : iPhone Air looks amazing, and amazingly, it looks like the entire camera system, PCB, is all in the camera casing on the back! [image] Jitesh Ubrani / @jiteshubrani : Pixel 9 looked like an iPhone and now iPhone Air looks like a Pixel 9 with the camera bar #AppleEvent @madebygoogle Ryan Hoover / @rrhoover : Time to finally upgrade [image] LinkedIn: Pranav Shroff : iPhone Air features an impossibly thin and light design that is more durable than any previous model, with innovative camera experiences and remarkable all‑day battery life … Bluesky: Ketan Joshi / @ketanjoshi.co : Not once in my entire life have I ever heard someone express their desire for a phone to be thinner — www.apple.com/newsroom/202... Threads: Guy Dickinson / @guydickinson : Get the iPhone Air experience today simply by taking the giant case off your phone. Josh Billinson / @jbillinson : Going to really enjoy seeing people buy this phone because it's so thin and then stick it in a case that makes it the size of a normal iPhone @cult_papa : i'm gonna snap the new iPhone Air like a glow stick with just the curve of my hips Chris Carley / @thatchriscarley : One of the most interesting things about the Apple event to me was how the iPhone Air seems to share some DNA with the iMac. In both cases, the entire PCB is confined to a small space in order for the remainder of the device to be very thing. In the iMac, that's the chin. … Michael Fisher / @captain2phones : Meanwhile, the iPhone Air tackles more fraught territory: do people actually care about a super-thin phone? I don't know, but I will say the iPhone Air impressed me more than Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge (pictured) on first pick-up. Its 5.6mm chassis really does feel like it shouldn't exist, in some “it's a movie prop” kinda way. … Katie Notopoulos / @katienotopoulos : iPhone Air looks incredible sick and i'm pretty sure my life will be perfect once i have it Forums: Hacker News : Apple announces the ultra-slim iPhone Air MacRumors Forums : iPhone 17 Lineup Starts at 256GB Storage, Pro Max Gets 2TB Option
I don't know who an iPhone Air is for. The rich/price indiscriminate people will want the better camera and battery from a Pro/Pro Max. Regular people want a regular phone or Plus. So who is this for? The super rich who need a secondary phone for some reason? Makes no sense.
Apple has much smarter battery management in iOS26, plus like 90% of this phone is battery, so optomistic but this is the biggest question. If it delivers on battery, this phone will sell more than most expect. [image]
In 2005(!) then RIM-co-CEO Jim Balsillie told me “thin was not a comparative advantage” in response to the launch of the Motorola Razr. we shall see. we shall see.
The key takeaway from $AAPL today: this was the most aggressive change to iPhone form factors since the iPhone 6 in 2014. The Pro models gained a new industrial design (sneaky good), and Apple introduced the new Air. Together, that means roughly 70% of iPhones sold will feature…
Apple opting not to call it the iPhone 17 Air leads me to believe the iPhone Air won't be on an annual upgrade cycle like the rest of the lineup. #AppleEvent [image]
I did not expect the iPhone Air to be so shiny. Looks gorgeous. Having the ‘nicest iPhone’ not necessarily be the ‘Pro’ lets Apple make the Pro more focused on big cameras, battery life, etc. — a great choice. Gonna be hard to pick one over the other. [image]
