In response to Elon Musk's claims that the App Store favors ChatGPT, Apple says that it “is designed to be fair and free of bias” and has “objective criteria”

Apple on @elonmusk's claims: “The App Store is designed to be fair and free of bias. We feature thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations, and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria.” https://www.bloomberg.com/...

@markgurman Mark Gurman

Context & Ripple Effects

Musk’s allegation that Apple blocks non-OpenAI AI companies from reaching the top of the App Store was made the same day, turning App Store discovery rules into a public dispute over AI distribution. Apple’s reply centers on charts, recommendations, and editorial featuring rather than conceding any preferential treatment.

The dispute also sits beside Apple’s planned ChatGPT operating-system integration, which reporting said involved no payment from Apple to OpenAI and could eventually be followed by revenue-sharing arrangements with chatbot providers. That distinction between platform integration and store ranking later became central to xAI’s lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI.

First-order effects

  • Apple publicly commits its App Store featuring and recommendation decisions to “objective criteria,” creating a clear defense against Musk’s bias allegation.
  • Musk and xAI now have Apple’s formal position to contest, after Musk alleged that rival AI apps could not top the store.

Second-order effects

  • The controversy puts two separate distribution advantages under sharper scrutiny: placement inside Apple’s operating systems and visibility in App Store charts or curated surfaces.
  • Competing chatbot providers have a stronger incentive to demand evidence that App Store discovery rules are applied consistently, rather than treating an AI integration partnership as proof of ranking favoritism.

Third-order effects

  • If AI assistants increasingly compete through platform-controlled discovery and default integrations, app-store neutrality claims will become a recurring competitive and legal test for gatekeepers.
  • The broader pressure is toward more contestable AI distribution: platforms may need to distinguish product partnerships from the rules governing rankings, recommendations, and editorial promotion.

The trend: AI competition is shifting from model capability alone toward whether platforms provide rival assistants comparable access to high-value distribution surfaces.

@markgurman @elonmusk Heya @AppStore, want to feature Fortnite?

“Selected by experts” because “unfairly hand-picked” didn't test well in the focus group.
  • @zkpedrongmi Pedro on x
Why doesn't Apple just say “yeah we own it, f*** off”? Playing the “fair and free of bias” card is a ton of work
  • @xdnibor Robin on x
“Objective” lol Let's put xAI aside for a second here. Did everyone forget about Fortnite suddenly? Yes Apple is NOT objective and has/will never feature games like Fortnite or others that they have issues with. My opinion: Is Apple lying, picking favorites and gatekeeping

Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take immediate legal action.

Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either 𝕏 or Grok in your “Must Have” section when 𝕏 is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps? Are you playing politics? What gives? Inquiring minds want to know.

This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like.

@elonmusk will you sign an affidavit that you have never directed changes to the X algorithm in a way that has hurt your competitors or helped your own companies? i will apologize if so.

Musk will likely get what he wants from the $AAPL App Store without the hassle of a lawsuit.  Give it two weeks to sort out.  While Apple has a right to run their store, I've learned the hard way never bet against Elon.  My guess is the outcome will be Apple decides to mention Gr…

Elon's argument about Grok/X's placement in the Top Charts - to me at least - is pretty baseless. But he's spot on about this: it's very strange Grok isn't in the AI-powered apps “now trending” section. I will note Claude - who Apple is close with - isn't either though.

When someone boots up an iPhone for the first time, not only should they be presented w/a menu of Siri/Apple Intelligence alternatives (OpenAI, Grok, Gemini, Claude, Llama, etc), the chosen model should have deep iOS API access to make calls, draft/send emails/adjust volume, etc.
